With all the different types of lenses, I'm not sure which lens which best suit my needs. Which wide angle lens would be a good choice?
Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX Aspherical DG DF
Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0 EX Aspherical DG
Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX Aspherical DG (a bit to much $$ though)
Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF
I've also noticed a HUGE!!!! difference in prices from different stores. Not having a credit card limits my options to either sending a check (rather not) or using PayPal (preferably). Any help choosing would be greatly appreciated.
Late edit:Or is there another lens I may have missed. I have a Minolta 7D, if that helps.

From this list I would decide between the 17-35 and the 20mm.
I use a Nikkor 17-35 f/2.8 and it is excellant. Some fotogs need 12-24, however I do not.

On a cropped senser, teh wider teh better. 28mm is wide on a film camera, but on a 1.6 APS is really 42mm, not wide at all.
Sigma makes a wonderful 18-50 2.8 EX DC. AS good optically as the canon 17-40 L and not too expensive. EX is sigma's pro glass. this is very nice glass. It works as a walkaround lens, great in low light, very sharp, excellent contrast. I might say it leans toward warm vs neutral colors (but i like that). My only complaint is it could be ab it faster focusing.
if you are used to 28mm, 18 will seem wide. If you are really wanting WIDE, then the 10-22, 12-24 type lenses are what you need. None of them are cheap though!
Of the ones you have listed, i'd still go with the 18-50 2.8. The difference of 17 or 18mm is not noteiceable, the 18-50 is great glass and constant ap of 2.8. The 15-30 is 2mm wider, perhaps noticeable, but at 30mm it is f4.5...not very good. the 18-50 would have more range, and would give you lliow light capability as well.
The prime you have listed, the 20mm 1.8, if you like primes would be great. the 1.8 would be outstanding.
Some samples from my 18-50:
I am looking for another lens myself. I spend some time reaading the reviews and technical info, and then looked at sample shots of those lenses here on DPC. That made a huge difference. Actually seeing the color, contrast and sharpness has enabled me to narrow it to one lens.
here on DPC
I assume they offer this lens for your camera...

Is there that big a difference between Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX DC and Sigma 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 DC? (I have the latter one)
Since i just recently got the lens, I haven't shot with it much.

Yes. The DC version needs to run for re-election every 4 years...
(sorry, couldn't resist...)

I dont own the lenses, but I do hear all the whine and praise on the sigma forum regarding these two. The EX is reportedly the better one--no surprise since its 4 times the cost of it's slower sibling.
And there are reportedly big differences in build quality as well as optical quality. Now, on the realistic side, if you get a good copy of the cheaper f3.5 lens (as ususal, quality can vary a great deal from sample to sample) it has been praised as being a very lightweight and more than adequate "walkabout" lens. (I imagine its much the same kind of performance one can expect from a good copy of the Canon "kit" lens.)
In the images I have seen I don't care enough for the the performance of the 2.8 to even consider it. Fast Sigmas tend to be very large and heavy, and I don't like that. However, I have been eyeing the 18-125 Sigma, but again, you would need to get a good copy because this lens appears to suffer more than most in the Quality Control department.
I wish lens buying wasn't such a crapshoot, but it is. Optically speaking, you can read every review in the world and it will hardly help you at all with your purchase. (Always best to try before you buy, when possible.) Regardless of how the reviews read, there is always the chance you will get a very good copy of a lens, or a very bad one.
Of course, it only matters only if you are able to tell the difference, and many people can't.

Sigma Wide Angle Lense Comparision
I included a comparision from Pricegrabber.com and added a couple of lenses you did not mention.
If I was to select one, I would chose the 10-20mm zoom or the 12-24mm zoom, which is actually wider because of it's asperical construction.
I use the 18-200 with satisfactory results at the wide end. The lense offers incredible versatility, all through it's range, as you can see from the link below.
Sigma 18-200
Here are some of my challenge submissions shot at the wide end of the lenses range.
One day, when I have more disposable income, I will probably buy either the 10-20 zoom or the 12-24 zoom. You can use Photoshop to correct the bending lines.
(edited for spelling:)

Also Consider the "Tokina 12-24" I find it to be a fairly nice lense. And sturdy build. Superb lens cap. However, I do not that my first unit focused poorly. I sent it back for a replacement and got another...worked fine.
This may seem terrifying. Except put in perspective my luck. Had to ship my new 70-200mm to Canon to be repaired (along with my 20D and battery grip as they were unsure of the culprit). The result...they lost my batter grip.
I also had to send my Hitachi Microdrive out for replacement.
*yup* that's my luck in life... |
