Don't try to be deep & meaningful - most voters seem to spend about 2 seconds on each image so any hidden meaning won't even have time to go over their heads.
Don't have a sense of humour - the voters don't.
Don't be too dark - most voters will just see a black rectangle on their poorly calibrated monitors.
Don't use shallow DoF - any out of focus parts of your image will be picked up on within the first of the 2 seconds you have to impress.
Don't use cuddly toys or pets - kids and flowers tend to do well though.
And most importantly, don't ever try to get clever with your interpretation of the challenge. Do exactly what it says on the tin or face the wrath of the 'I don't get it' brigade.
Alternatively, don't worry about winning. Do what you want to do, enjoy it if it does well, don't sweat it if it doesn't. Have fun, learn, and if that elusive win happens your way think how glad you are that you didn't have to be a slave to fashion to get it.
Yes, my tongue is very firmly planted in my cheek as I type this, but I'm sure there's a point in there somewhere ; )

Even though everyone perceives differently due to their local variables, I rarely ever get comments about my pic being too dark or too light. I find if I stay away from the extreme ends of the light or dark scale, I never get those kinds of comments. So that may be heartening to you, if you have received erroneous commentary about your exposure. |
So that's what that histogram thingie on my camera is for? I've been wondering about that :) I better head back to the manual since I'm told my pics are too dark every week :)

The histogram is a wonderful tool to display for you the dispersion of light and dark in the highlights, mid-tones and shadows. Different cameras have different displays, but the concept is pretty much the same across the board.
Here is a link to DPreview that does a great job of defining it for you.
Histogram 101
Histogram
By Phil Askey
A histogram function on a digital camera allows the photographer to quickly and easily see the accuracy and "spread" of the exposure over the cameras grayscale range (dynamic range). The histogram itself is a graph of brightness along the horizontal axis (black to white) and the number of pixels at each brightness level on the vertical axis. Most digital SLR's and some newer prosumer digital cameras feature a histogram review mode, understanding what the histogram is telling you about your exposure is important to get the most out of your digital camera. Examples of histograms below. |

I am dreaming about 4.6s this week, you rock!
That is why I am on the hunt for the secret formula to winning on DPC and is the reason for this thread. The input is logged and will contribute to the final analysis. LOL |

Well, I'm talking about my average since April -- and I'm guessing because I haven't actually checked in a while. One of my entries this week just this morning crept over the 3.5 barrier! |

Welcome to my planet. We can both still rock, a little anyway! LOL |
