Ok, I've given 29 comments so far in the Image Grain challenge, and there are some nice shots in there!! I've got several more in mind to comment on, once I think on it more and still about 75 pics to vote as well.

And then I looked at my stats for this challenge. I've got 87 votes and NO comments.

Now, in the scheme of things, this isn't so bad. Particularly because I'm not that pleased with my shot and if I were a voter I'd rip it to pieces.

But I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this phenomenon? This is the first challenge I've ever entered that had so many votes with NO comments!

And that got me thinking about what I could do about that....
So here's what I'd like to propose:

For every person that leaves me a comment (and I know that neither of us will know that till the challenge is over), when the voting is done I will leave 5 (yes FIVE!) comments on your photos.

Who else will join me in this challenge???

Hi Elizabeth. I try to comment on most of the entries given the time I have. Hopefully I can cross yours.

Since I won't have time to comment in the challenge, I can comment on other photographs in your porfolio if that helps...

Thanks rikki11 :-) I know that most people do (at least I choose to believe that!) and I know that the voting hasn't been open really long. In part, this is to encourage me to make the most comments I can as well :-) I think that's one of the fun parts of this site!

Hehehehe! If you want to trade comments, I'm always up for that :-) And, I have to say--I've noticed several times with many people that you're always willing and ready to give comments! Bravo for that!!

I'm not in any challengesright now, so I can't join you, but it sounds like a great idea. I have recently started a practice to make at least one more comment than received during any challenge. This way I can slowly chip away at the made/received ratio that I let get out of hand.

Instead of starting at the top this challenge, I started with 5's. The 5 is an interesting score. It's a picture which needed a lot of work, but had enough hope that I couldn't give it a 4. I'll get to the good ones later...

Adamweb, I feel your pain :-)

DrAchoo, Isn't that the truth?!?! I think I'm going to make it a personal goal to comment ONLY on ALL photos I score 5 or below for the next few challenges. Or even just the 5s....because you're right, it's interesting. But I find that I can almost ALWAYS find something I like about a photo, and I figure if I say what I like, then at least people will know what to keep doing. Or something :-) Hahaha, not that I'm sure anyone should take my advice ;-)

I got a comment from you and I do appreciate it.. Remind me after the challenge to discuss it with you... I want to show you something that may change your opinion of 'old' photos and grain :)

She let a very nice comment, but it opened my eyes to something. She will get a helpful check, and I don't check comments as helpful.. lol...

My photograph should have no grain in it to be an accurate representation of what it is... food for thought... We can discuss this after the challenge... I'm gonna have to do a little research now...

I think I know exactly which one is your's...

EDIT: Well, I think I can narrow it down to 3... ;)

I like your idea ladyhawk22. Depending on the number of entries, I have tried to comment on as many as possible these past few challenges. I'm lucky to ave 8 comments on my grain entry, all are positive, yet I sit at a 5.2

Since joining in August I have always chosen to comment on the ones I score lowest first, then I move onto the ones that are easy to comment on. So, I take your challenge, and here's to constructive comments.

most of the comments i recieve are from people i've never even heard of, ya know the ones who arent very active in the forums. The regulars never comment on my images.

The only regulars that I get regular comments from are Jutilda and CalliopeKel. But they always leave nice comments, so I'm happy for that.

Kelly always seems to use the word "love" in her comments, which also makes me happy. :D No comment from her this time :o(

Maybe they thought you had grain built-in to your retina?

Strange--so many people post that they want more comments, then when they get them they complain about what people say. If 20 people viewed a famous painting in an art museum, you would probably get 20 different opinions on if it is good or bad and why. My grain entry has 2 comments, one says good composition, I like X and the other says X is distracting. (where X is the same element) It is personal preference and an opinion. Don't ask for comments and then tell the commenters their opinons are wrong.

Strange - I missed that part in this thread.

I will say I felt like I was all over the place on voting this challenge. Even just dividing into two groups 6's and 4's (to be further divided later) was hard. One picture would be excellent, but have only a smidge of noise, the next would have lots of noise, but wouldn't be too good. To make matters worse, the amount of noise "required" seemed to be a moving target. I think I managed to sort things out in the end, but I'll say again, it was tough.

On top of all that, there were different "styles" of grain and that made it difficult as well. Some seemed much more filmlike and appealing than others. I didn't give below a 4 though (and I'm not scared to do that).

I guess most don't like my grainy X's (or the rest of the picture for that matter)!

This sums up nicely a key factor that some voters are missing. The challenge was to use grain (aka noise) to help communicate the message of your photograph. No where does it say that the entire image must be grainy, (although it could be) nor does it say that a required amount of grain is the minimum or maximum. It is left to the voters to decide that line.

Although I understand the comments left on my entry and I appreciate them very much, I apparently did a poor job of effectively using "grain", as the consistent comment is "where is the grain?".

For months I have read thread after thread on the virtues of one camera versus another based on the fact that it has an ISO capability of 100 instead of 200. The reasons given for the benefit of the ISO 100 was the improvement of less grain. Therefore it comes as a surprise to me to have shot a frame at ISO 1600, usm'd .3px at 304% and yet the prevailing thought is no grain. I can only conclude that those voting either miss the grain present in the elements of the photograph that communicate the message, or the banter between camera users on the virtue of ISO 100's superiority over a body with a minimum of ISO 200, was misguided.

Regardless, I always learn from comments made and it truly helps to have an unbiased and honest opinion from another photographer. I hope that those that receive comments glean the learning intended and those that leave them, continue to do so.
