from a business standpoint, i probably wouldn't go into business with anyone i hadn't met in person, or at least talked to on the phone. that would knock two people off my list. of the others, only one have i not met in person; the rest, i've had the pleasure of shooting with side-by-side, and i'm not sucking up to anyone. i would rather work with people i admire and feel can push me further, though, than to simply be the big fish in my own pond. |

To people who know me, I don't suck up either. I can be nice in polite society, but I DON'T SUCK UP. Plus what would be the need to do that in this venue? I don't get it.

There are of course probably 100s of others, but if I wanted to offer the best in content and style to prospective clients, this crew would get whatever they asked of us done.

There are 71 photographers on my favorites list. I could pick just about any 5 at random and know my business would take off. Of course, anyone on the site favorites list is an obvious choice. Here are five less familiar partners to guarantee success:
Ursula- The composer. Finds the hidden color and composition in even the most mundane subjects.
Elsapo- The rising star. Versatile and technically excellent. It would be foolish to leave him to a competitor.
Dax- The artist. Her portfolio is an art gallery waiting to happen.
EddyG- The thinker. Proof that you can never have too much imagination.
jodiecoston- The teacher. Every shot a lesson in photographic excellence.
So, anybody wanna start a business...? ;-) |

Perfect proof you posted the way you did on this thread...
Anyway,
My 5 picks are:
JPR for his streetish style
xion for his extreme image-moodyness
goodman for her appealing artistic abilities and transfered emotion
grigrigirl for her representation of form and the human body
heida for her photoshop genious and her art's mass appeal

What I would truely like to know is who is making their living off of photography here? Are all the 'greats'?

I'm shocked alfresco! What do you do?
What got me wondering is....I was at the mall last nite and saw a portion of a corner with about 6 portraits framed and some rack cards there (decent unique photos of children mostly). It was someone advertising their photography business. I took a card and went to their website studio193.
So I decided to check it out online, and I must say that I'm feeling fairly certain I could do this myself. I haven't worked in this field before and have been unsure about the competition in the area. My not having a studio (place to bring clients) is probably the big lack in this scenario.
They say on their site they have 3 offices. Got me wondering if they are a company rather than an individual.
Just curious. |

roadrunner-
Sadly it aint for sale, has to be earned..LOL
Start small...volunteer to be a backup photog maybe and see how your confidence level builds over time. Once you see you can produce great photos (and we all know you can) you will soon learn to turn those no's into yes's. Go for it girl. |

FWIW, you were among my choices of "5 photographers." I only left you out because I haven't seen enough of your photos. From what I HAVE seen, you certainly have the ability to do this professionally. |

Yeah I totally agree. Theres so many 'professionals' I've seen around locally that don't have half the skill of some DPCers.

thanks guy's... i spose it will all come over time... it's just very daunting to take money off someone, and make sure they like what you do...i just have no confidence from being a stay at home mum for the past 14 years, but like i told my kids this year.." It's now my turn "
i have grown in confidence just by being on this site, i tell people i am studying over seas at the moment.. and then to read this thread and see my name under some people's choice's gives me a real boost..
THANKS.... from the bottom of my heart......

Like I said, he's a great guy to have on your team. And so as to repeat myself again, I'd be honored to work along side both of you. :-) But you and I Kelly would have a heck of a problem, as we both seem to have nerves and self doubt when it comes to jumping in with both feet. We'd never get anything done! And that would be where Skip would come in handy!! Nothing works best like a swift kick in the rear to get you moving in the right direction. :-D

LOL... i will shoot and shoot, it seems second nature ( not actually it seems first nature now ) but as far as actually taking money off someone and having them have the photos hanging on their wall, freaks me out... im more worried they will ask for their money back after a little while... hahah....
it would be great if we all lived closer, would love to work along side all of you.... even if it was for a day...
thanks jennifer...

In my opinion you definitely have in ample supply the requisite skills for being a portrait photographer, you have a wonderful eye. |

it's never easy getting started, but if you sit on your ass worrying about it, you'll never know...
not everybody has the obsession/passion/opportunity to make a go at something like photography, but what have ya got to lose?
it's one thing to expect to pay the mortgage, health insurance, buy groceries, etc right out of the gate. on the other hand, start working, start charging, and little by little, you'll get to where you want to be. ya gotta start somewhere...
