I saw this on someone's profile on Photosig:
The artist's mistake is he who would paint more to please the eyes of the ignorant, than the intellect of the wise.
There wasn't an attribute...

Interesting quote. I beg to differ though. I believe if you manage to please the wise...or the ignorant...you've probably pleased them both. The 'wise' just happen to know why the image is appealing. |

hehe... and it doesn't really stand true on this site... dpchallenge.com. The best man doesn't always win in an election, but the popular man will. Why? Because it is a contest... judged by the masses and not a 'blue ribbon panel' as it's been referred to.
Without getting into the debate of "what would you rather submit, a quality photo you can be proud of or a photo to please everyone else", I point you to the tag line of this board, a digital photography contest.
But I pity the foo who can't do both. Which I am painfully learning.

I like the quote... It holds a lot of truth I believe... I just don't think it applies well at DPChallenge...
You can photograph whatever you want and however you want to do it at DPC. Since DPC is a contest site, I enjoy making photos that I think will appeal to the viewers and voters.

Unfortunately, as a beginner, I sometimes need a bit of a "push" to get me to shoot photos. DPC challenges have been great at giving me a springboard for ideas. Problem is, my interpretation isn't always as .... mainstream as it is for this site.
I consider it no coincidence that my best score ever came in the "Free Study" challenge. LOL. Not ONE SINGLE PERSON could argue with my photo not being "on topic."
I've got a ton of my pictures lined up and ready to print out. I'm really excited at the way this site has helped me express my creativity.
But, back to the thread: great quote. Totally true.

When you are here for a long time and look around at different picture, browse different ideas and how to's. You will start to understand the voters. It is just looking and taking the best shot you can and critiqueing it yourself that will make you good. And that takes alot of practice and bad pictures to get better. That is how I am learning. Ask lots of questions and hopefully you will get lots of answers. I you feel you need a critique before submitting, then write me and I will do my best to tell you what the voter would think. I am not always right, but would it hurt.
And one more thing...it takes lots of shooting to get the right one. I feel that if you don't have enough time then don't submit.
