I have heard a lot of references to USM, like sharpening nad such, what is it? it a program? or a method?

oh, should have known, I have a program for that, I don't like photoshop's outcomes with this

CS2's smart sharpen is much better :)

this topic comes up once a week :)
thats why i can feel smart in copying someone else's answer

USM = Unsharpen Mask
also canon wanted to make things difficult for us and put usm on some of thier lens's
Canon's Usm = Ultra sonique Motor but thats not the question... :)

I have had great results using USM in Photoshop CS2 it makes my photos about 50/60 percent sharper with my really nasty 18-55 mm kit lens

oh and about that kit lens people complaining about the soft focus...
manual focus.. all the difference in the world

Pffft! It stands for Ultra-Sonic Meditation: You stare at the photo you're editing and everything becomes so much clearer...everyone knows that! =)
