We drove this Highway 1 a few years ago from LA up to SF - unbelievable, exciting fantastic photo opportunities. We took 2 days and stayed over at Pismo. Meant we could just stop where we wanted, linger over long lunches, take our time to really appreciate a journey of a lifetime.

brought back wonderful memories just thinking about it!

Don't you mean Hwy 101?

Nope. 101 is mostly inland. The coast route is Highway 1. There are some places where they merge together, notably around Santa Barbara.

If you start in LA, you can drive Hwy 1 from Santa Monica through Malibu and all the way up to Oxnard. In Oxnard you pick up 101 and continue, on the coast, right through Santa barbara and north to Point Conception, where the highway turns right and heads inland. Once you get over the small mountain range (and through a tunnel I might add) the road turns left again and heads up the central valley past Santa Maria, then picks up the coast once more at Pismo beach or thereabouts.

You can take Hwy 1 off 101 after you cross the mountains and head north past Vandenburg AFB and Guadaloupe, and it rejoins 101 at Pismo Beach. Anyway, 1/101 runs up the coast from Pismo Beach for a number of miles then turns inland again to San Luis Obispo. In SLO 1 splits off again to head north and picks up the coast again at Morro Bay. 101 heads inland and runs up the valley all the way to San Jose. It's at this juncture that Coast Highway 1 gets interesting, from Morro Bay on up all the way to Cambria, San Simeon, Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay and, eventually, San Francisco.

Can you tell I've driven this road times beyond counting? :-)

Hehehehe. I've driven this road many many times over as well. Went to school at Cal Poly for four years and still visit every year. My professor has a vacation house he's opened up for me whenever I come down. It's in Cayucos and overlooks Morro Rock. I typically either ride my bike along Highway 1 to San Simeon and back or bring my kayak and do some ocean kayaking.

This sounds like a great thread. I used to live in Santa Maria :) Just a few miles from Pismo and SLO.

I miss it there.

6 year plan huh? I studied at the College of Architecture. Technically I guess I was on the 8 year plan since I attended architecture school in the Philippines then my family moved here after 3 years of tortuous schooling. Cal Poly declined me the first time I applied so I attended a junior college. A year later I found myself in the beautiful central coast.

A bit of trivia:

Did you guys know that the movie 10 Commandments was partly filmed in the Pismo Dunes and part of Grover Beach? They actually still have remnants of the movie set still scattered around the area.

The Ultimate Fighter Chuck Liddell went to Cal Poly for his Business and Accounting degree and graduated in 1995? Same year as I graduated :)

John Madden and Ozzie Smith are alumnus. John Madden's fear of flying was caused by an abrupt plane landing when he and his team were flying to Oregon for a football game. He never flied since.

Anytime the snow isn't covering the ground, the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota is beautiful. It's beautiful with snow as well, but tougher to get around. Base in Duluth and drive all the way up the shoreline to Canada. Easily could spend a few days doing. Grand Marais is my favorite small town.

Arch's National Park in Moab, Utah is also wonderful in a different way, but is alittle more remote. Be prepared for hot hot days, but the images you will capture are worth the sweat.

If you enjoy mixing sports and nature and have at least a week to burn (and some cash), go to the North Shore of Oahu in December. The 7 mile shoreline is the surfing meca - the best surf in the world. During the winter, the surf can get very large and very exciting to photograph - with or without surfers. In November/December each year, there are three competitions that you can watch. The most exciting is the event at the Banzaii Pipeline. This powerful wave breaks very close to shore so you can get 'close' to the action. Oahu doesn't have all the beauty like the other islands, but it is still VERY beautiful and there is alot more to Oahu than just the surf. From a gear standpoint, to capture the surfers, you will want to some length. I visited last year with a sigma 50-500 on a digital rebel and wanted more length (and image quality). Bring plenty of storage as well. I shot nearly 3000 images last year and didn't shoot the whole time. I liked Oahu so much, that I'm going back again this year.

Well first stop would of course be back to Georgetown, KY to pick up the wife and daughter then (like I will be doing in November) back to my home state, Colorado. I haven't spent more than a week there in way too many years. They've already gotten snow and I'm betting it is all but gone in the lower areas too. Sure it gets cold there but it really isn't bad. I really miss the different seasons, the colors, the mountains...augh crap now I'm homesick again...23 days and I'll be there even if it is just for the weekend.

and Weird AL Yankovik went there to study Architecture, became a DJ on KCPR and recorded songs int the men's room across the hall from the station because he liked the sound in there.

Oh yeah, I hope you liked the Rec Center. I voted for it my 1st year there, but it didn't get finished until a year AFTER I graduated. Thanks Warren.

We try to drive through the Blue Ridge and Shenendoah mountains every couple years. Nice meandering drive through some fantastic country. Lots of opportunity for Dusk and Dawn pictures, waterfalls, foliage, flora, fauna, landscape, and of course family pictures.

Once we get to the top of the parkway, we swing over and head into the Pennsylvania Dutch country. Great photo ops there, too.

A very strong push for Highway 1 trip.

Thanks for everyone for their input, it is greatly appreciated!

Someone asked why, someone wondered if it were worth the money for a weekend.

If you're not interested skip the next part:

=== skip this ===

This isn't a sympathy thing, just background as to why I'd go somewhere and spend money like that if just for a weekend.

I've been having breathing/fatigue problems for about a year. After many gallons of blood work, many x-rays, and many presciptions, I had a chest ct scan done. That was six weeks ago. The friday after the scan I got a call from the Doc (not a good sign) who said there was something "interesting" so she referred it to a vascular surgeon with whom she had scheduled an appt for me the following Thurs. I go to the doc, blah blah blah big area in right lung, blah blah blah can't get it all out if it's c-word, going to have to do "aggresive therapy", showed me the scans and woah look at that thing. Doc says we'll do another pic next month, see what it looks like. Then one the month after, etc. If at any time it changes it'll be biopsy time, we'll take it cautiously and be optimistic.

I psyched myself up for chemo. I psyched myself up for losing a lung. I psyched myself up for death. I came to terms with the "if something's there i can't change it let's go" thing. A very interesting month it's been. A lot of brain activity. A lot. Introspection. Inspection. Reflection. Anticipation.

Last week: new ct scan. See doc last thursday. It's gone. He was as shocked as I was, or at least seemed to be. Side by side comparison of scans: on this one, not on that one. "big-word-indicating-cancer-that-was-thrown-about-earlier", all gone.

I had entirely good outlook before this happened, now I have a monstrously grand and appreciative sense of everything. And a lot of things that seemed important, they really aren't. My already high appreciation for the beauty of everything has been increased immensely.

Interestingish aside, Friday I got a call from a friend who heard about this through the grape vine (I didn't tell too many people), he just happened to be going through the exact same thing. He had a bad weekend but his tests came back already and it's mostly good news. The interesting thing when we talked was that I told him I wasn't afraid, rather I had an excited anticipation feeling (like Christmas or a birthday party or something like that), which I thought was very odd. He said his was the exact same feeling. Odd.

Anyway, that's why I'd go somewhere and spend the money for just a weekend.

=== end skip this ===

So I want to go somewhere. See something I haven't seen. Do something I haven't done. I want to live.

Highway 1 seems to be winning for the initial trip, there will be other trips (at least as many as I can afford).

Florida report for idnic
-2 pts for soup duel
+1 pt for warm weather
-2 pts for another hurricane (wilma)
+2 pts there shouldn't be a hurricane during my time frame

So, anywhere else? Why?

Thanks guys and gals!

Best of luck on your trip! I can't wait to see your photos posted.

I would go to Vegas, if it was an adult weekend! If it was including the family, Florida. Disney world would make for some awesome photos!

Hmmmm, If I could I'd head on down to Tennessee (family there) & then on to North Carolina. The mountains are so beautiful & peaceful. I'd also try to get over to the Outer Banks, another area where my ancestors lived. Shoot, what am I saying....after all that, I'd just MOVE to the mountains if I could!

Also wanted to add........Thank God that your tests turned out for the better :) :) :).
It's unfortunate how many times the big "C" has touched too close to our lives. I am happy that you will be OK.

hehehehe...I learned something new! It would have been nice to have been a fly on your wall (backpack, camera, something you had with you) to have just been able to have gone to all the places you been and done everything you've done!!

I grew up, married, divorced, and lived in tiny town in Oregon my whole life (the kind where you know everyone)....never lived anywhere else...then in 1998....met boyfriend....liked him and up and moved clear across the country to Florida!!! I'm still recuperating! :) That has been the extent of excitement in my life!

...And don't forget to linger awhile in some of those places. I lived in Monterey for a year (34 years ago!) and spent lots of time on Fisherman's Wharf - a great Fish 'n Chips place called "Captain's Gig".

Monterey is where you would find Cannery Row (that John Stenbeck wrote about in the 40s)... I recall a great little coffee shop there, where poets and folk singers would entertain for hours. The Wharehouse was our watering hole. I was in the Army at the time (studying at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey), and many of us were caught up in the anti-war movement - our sentiments exacerbated by those poets etc. Cannery Row was wonderful!

I went back to Monterey about 5 years ago. The Captain's Gig is still there, under a new name. The Wharehouse is gone. Cannery Row is there, but -WOW- has it changed! Many tourists and gift shops. In my opinion, the commercialization has destroyed its character. Steinbeck is rolling over in his grave.

We often drove to Carmel Beach, through 17 Mile Highway (as I think it was called?), past Pebble Beach. Awesome places! (so why am I living in Western NY?? ;-)

...Don't mean to hijack the thread. This just rekindled some memories. I only want to underscore what bear said, ...and the effect that Highway 1 and locations along it would have on you.

Len,

I don't consider it a hijack at all, that's the kind of info that is great!

Thanks everyone!!

Digesting info, I feel many questions brewing :)

More more more!!! Thanks again, this is all extremely interesting and exactly what I'm looking for!

Bear Music started me off on my own memory lane this morning on travels along California Highway One.

Starting from the northern end at Leggett, CA where it splits from Rt. 101:

You may, if you wish, start your journey by driving through a Tree. This redwood still lives and puts up with the traffic. There̢۪s a pond nearby and the obligatory gift shoppe.

For some miles, you̢۪re driving through redwoods, but then burst into sunlight and the grandeur of the Pacific. The first fairly large towns come at Fort Bragg and Mendocino. Fort Bragg is the less expensive place to stay. I̢۪ve had good (and reasonable) accommodations at the
SeaBird Lodge . Way too much to photograph here and in Mendocino.

After some more spectacular driving (It’ll take about 8 hours if you don’t stop too often – and you will) you’ll reach San Francisco. Plenty to do here.

Santa Cruz is next with Monarch Butterflies at the state park (Oct. - March).

Before getting to the Monterey area, there is Moss Landing, home of Sanctuary Cruises The whales and dolphins are out in force this year and the 4-5 hour boat ride is likely to be fabulous. The folks who run it, Heidi and Steph, are true conservationists who care deeply for these sea creatures.

In Pacific Grove, you might try for a transient room at Asilomar, a state Conference Center on spacious grounds right down at the ocean. I̢۪m there several times a year, sometimes with fellow painters, other times with photographer friends.

Big sur? A spectacular drive. (I know, we all say that).

Just before you get to Cambria, there are Elephant Seals right at the side of the road. With a parking lot! Docents will help you understand these magnificent creatures. December, January, February are the busy months, when there's birthing, mating and domestic behavior. Have I used the word "spectacular" yet?

This just scratches the surface. You'll find the rest. Enjoy.

Photographically interesting is always good, but everywhere can be photographically interesting.

Hey alfresco, read right thru the post and read your recent medical episode. Man, that's good news for you. I had same problems this year, lost a kidney to cancer, now I live my life my way!! If I want it, I get it...Live life to the full, not just live life. Enjoy your trip, enjoy your family and enjoy your life!!
