Depends on how much money you want to spend. Photoshop CS2 is state of the art, and very expensive. Photoshop Elements 3 gives a LOT of the functionality of CS2 at a fraction of the cost, and it puts you on the upgrade path for future full-featured versions. Photoshop 7.0 is still available for much less money than CS2, and does practically everything CS2 does. I still use 7.0...

If I were starting out, on a budget, I'd look for a copy of 7.0 and upgrade later.

Robt.

Well, I found a copy of CS2 for $30 - and a copy of 7.0 for $20. Both from a website recommended by a member here... what do you think?

Sounds like illegal software sales to me.

Im sure you can still download the trial version and test it out for a month, then when the monthis up, download it again...hehehe Im letting my secret out the bag, I actually used to do that untill i bought my first copy of PS6.0 now i run CS2. but another option is PAINTSHOP PRO its pretty damn good for the price and offers most of what photoshop does and i think it actually runs photoshop plug-ins too, however i may be mistaken there.

As MrBear says you can get a version of PS7 at a very reasonable cost and then upgrade later if you see the need to.

good luck with it.

CS2 = $555.99 on Amazon. CS2 @$30 is even cheaper then the books for the program.

In there F.A.Q. section = Q: Are these programs legal?

Ans: No, these are just copies of the original programs or their "cracked" versions. You can't register them. We guarantee the full functionality though. We will provide you with CD and serial#. You only need one copy in this case and you can install it on as many machines. If you are looking to buy licenses, please look for some other vendor.

Free Adobe Elements 3 with Wacom Graphire 4 purchase. Normally retails under $100 but this way you get a graphics tablet too. Might be an option for those in search of software.

By getting Adobe Elements 3 you can upgrade to a real copy of CS2 for a discounted price.

I'm trying out Photoimpact 11 from Ulead. It's a free trial version and I like it alot. I also downloaded the trial of Photoshop Elements 4.0. They are both pretty similar. So im having alot of trouble deciding. Still, nobody comes close to Picasa2 as far as organizing and quick, basic fixes goes.
