I have a like new Nikkor 24-120 ED VR lens that I would like to trade for a Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 D lens. I might consider the 85mm f/1.8 D as well. Please respond here or PM me if interested...

| John - are you willing to sell it outright? If so, how old, what condition, have you used it? Thi shas been a good lens but some copies have been deemed soft. I may be interested if it is a sharp copy. |

It's my dad's lens. He hasn't complained about any issues with it and he's a very good photographer. He would have said something if there was an issue with it. I bought it for him for Christmas and he would rather have another prime. I'll ask him if he will sell it outright and how much he wants for it... It may be tomorrow until I can get an answer. |

Is the softness problem a 'known' problem that Nikon has acknowledged? I can't seem to find anything on it. I was trying to look to see if there was a serial number range that went along with the problem you have described here and can't find any information on it. |

| He said he would take $425 plus shipping (payment via paypal) if you want to buy it outright. |

Let me give it a little thought. Trying to decide if I want to replace my 18-70 kit lens and this one looks like it gives a good range for a walk around. Also would matche up with my 12-24 well.
BTW - the info on some copies being soft came from Fred Miranda:

| I can't find anything from Nikon about issues with the lens. User reviews will always vary, especially with VR. None of the reviews I read on Fred Miranda were validated with any examples or valid testing. I believe that a lot of folks believe that VR and IS make it possible to shoot sharp photos in any conditions, and it's simply not true. VR and IS will not give you a faster shutter speed. From my personal experience with a Canon IS lens, when the IS is turned on, nothing is as sharp as it could be. I believe that IS will give you better hand holding capabilities in low light, but I believe it's nearly impossible to get a really sharp hand held photo in poor light in any conditions. Some will be better than others, but it's hit and miss. |

| I've heard the original non-VR had sharpness troubles, but I've owned the VR & its quite sharp. For a year or two it was my primary lens for event/wedding photography before I went digital. The lens IMO is not as usefull on digital. The only really negative optically with the lens is flare. I've never seen a lens so sensitive to flare. I considered it a indoor lens only. |

I personally LOVE that lens and I think its a great deal... I used to have the manual 85mm f1.4 and that is too a fantastic piece of glass. This is a very good deal being offered and Im sure you will get a buyer or exchange very soon, however I believe it will be easier to sell rather than trade..
good price too as new they are still over $600 in Japan.
