In the spirit of encouraging newer photographers I thought it would be cool to have a special challenge, maybe a members challenge, that would serve to really be a teaching tool. Here's the idea: (And maybe this has been done before??)
To enter you must
Have entered at least 10 challenges
Have an average vote recieved of 4.5 to 5.4
Left more comments than you've received
Voting could be normal or restricted to those who didn't enter the challenge, or done by a panel of judges.
Ribbons could be special light blue, pink, and green or something so as not to be confused with the "real" ribbons.
Just thought it would be fun for the middle of the pack to have a challenge where the competition wasn't generally so far out of reach as to be discouraging.

There have been "invitational" challenges in the past, with various restrictions on who can enter (some similar to those you mention), but I haven't seen one in a while. I wonder what became of them. I always enjoyed them (though was only qualified to enter one) as it was fun to see what a certain group of people would do... |

I think you've got a great idea. I would love to see this type challenge myself.

Mind busting that "entered 10" down to "entered 5" ?

I think you have too many conditions ... I'd suggest for the last that you just put a threshold on it, like 100 or 200 comments made.
It's possible for someone to not have more comments made than received, no matter how hard they try. For example, in a challenge of 300 entries, I can make no more 299 (legitimate) comments (if I entered). But by some abberation, all 44,000 registered members could decide to log in and comment on my image that week ... it would only take a small group of people working in concert to sabotage someone's ability to meet this requirement. |

On the comments -- my thought there was that typically the people in the middle of the pack get very few comments on their pictures, which is often a reason why they have a hard time getting better. I was hoping to help those people who don't get a lot of feedback.
If you have more comments than you've given, either you don't give many comments or you've gotten significant feedback already.
I don't think anyone would purposely go sabotage someone else, and if so it'd be obvious who did it because their name goes with their comment. |

And comments given don't always have to reflect challenges. Heck, I comment on newly uploaded photos all day (gee, I need a life). LOL

Up the average vote received to, oh... let's say 5.521 and I'll endorse the idea. ;-) |

I think this is a great idea, but your restrictions seem to be geared towards eliminating those who need help the most, like me!
Personally, I have left very few comments but that's because I don't feel like I've got enough knowledge and understanding of the technical aspects of photography to be able to comment constructively. I could say things like "ooh" and "ahh" or "DNMC" or something else to that effect to raise my comments made/received ratio, but is that really helpful to anyone?
Also, I have 4.1 average of votes received (which will drop after the current challenge). Unless I can pull a rabbit out of a hat, that would eliminate me from participation.
I desperately want to become a better photographer. That's why I'm here. Feedback from those who are more experienced is invaluable to newbs like me who are anxious to learn.
My suggestion would be to go the other way with the number of challenges entered: Maximum entered = 25, maybe? and leave it at that.

Some time ago, on a different challenge-type site, one member mentioned that he had left comments on every entry. That inspired me to have a go and make a comment, which led to making more comments and even trying, myself, to leave comments on every entry in a challenge. The point I'm trying (badly) to make is that you should have a go at leaving comments. Take a few moments to analyse what it is that you like or dislike about a particular picture and try to discern why that might be and even what might be improved about it.( I often download challenge entries and trial run my suggested edits before making any suggestions, just to see if they work at all) Leave a comment stating that, in your opinion, such-and-such is good or doesn't quite work etc. I found this to be an extremely valuable tool for learning, as you can learn by the successes and mistakes of others. I may not be a much improved photographer, but I know a bit more about what it is that I'm looking at and, indeed, what I might be looking for.
