I see a bunch of references lately to lenses built for cameras that have different sizes of sensors. Some of the lenses will work and some won't. Can you tell that I'm really confused?
I guess what I really want to know is what size sensor does the Digital Rebel have, compared to standard 35mm size?
Hopefully someone out there knows what I'm getting at here....

I think he's talking about EF-S lenses vs EF lenses.

EF-S lenses only work on certain Canon cameras. EF lenses should work on your Rebel no problem. I know the 20D takes EF-S lenses, but I forget what all other models. If you look up an EF-S lens it should say what it goes on.

There's other threads around about it but I'm too lazy to look for 'em.

On the Canon side EF-S lenses work on the 300D, 350XT, 20D; EF lenses work on all of them.

Sigma and Tamron make many lenses that work for reduced frame sensors only and won't work with full frame lenses.

Canon has 3 types of DSLR sensors the smallest 1.6x crop (300D, 350XT, 10D, 20D); 1.3X crop (1D, 1D II) and Full frame (1Ds, 1Ds II and 5D)

Nikon has only one size sensor on its DSLR's 1.5X crop

doctornick, that's exactly what I was looking for! Awesome. So the Sigma and Tamron reduced frame lenses will work with my Rebel.
And to the rest of you that responded, thank you! All helpful info. You guys rock!

Yes they will work on your Rebel...BUT if in the future you plan on moving up to a bigger sensor you'll have to change lenses...Camera bodies come and go, good lenses stay longer...

The sensors' crop factor are a reference to the full frame size sensor. Full frame (FF) is equivalent to what the 35mm film size is: 24mm x 36mm. Because most lenses that are used for digital SLR cameras were built for use with film cameras their circle of light covers most efficiently the FF size. However, because FF sensors have been very expensive to build up until recently a smaller sensor was used that is more economical and so we have the different crop factors.
Hope this helps.

One other thing to keep in mind is that most FF lenses are not perfect. They have a sweet spot around the center of the lens that is often the size of the 1.6 crop factor sensor. You can see this on the MTF chart of many lenses.
