Hi,
Currently have the kit lens for the Digital Rebel XT.
Was thinking of getting a zoom lens.
Any suggestions for a $499 max budget?
Thought about the Sigma 28-200mm.. if you can suggest something better? |

I love my Canon 28-135mm IS. I'd replace it in a second with the new 24-105mm L lens, but it costs 3 times as much as this very versatile lens. Joebob sez check it out!

I've got the Tamron 28-300mm XR.
It is a little soft wide open at 300mm, but nothing too bad for lenses in this price range. This lens is great for travel- it is very compact and covers a wide range.

For $220 the Sigma 70-300 APO DG MAcro II is a great lens. It's not L glass and there are better lens out there (for much more $$$), but for $220 it lets you do a lot of things.
The 28-135 IS is a good all around general purpose lens.
I know you said zoom, but the Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro is an amazing lens as well in that price range. The Canon 50mm f1.8 is a very fun lens for about $80 too.
What do you like to shoot and what are you looking for (telephoto or wide)?

I'll second that. I bought that and a Canon 100-300mm 4-5.6 USM to complement my kit lens and it was a perfect combination. Either one I'd say would make a great second lens, depending on the focal lengths you want. |

Since you have the kit lens already, look close at the sigma 70-300mm APO Macro DG lens.
For $200 (or less) this lens is going to be difficult to beat. |

With $500 too spend, don't be tempted to just something that will fit on the lens mount. The budget is going to be a little bit if issue.
I "ran out" of lens too many occasions, finding myself wanting to do some things, but couldn't, especially in lower lower light condions.
As all-purpose walkabout lens, I opted for the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di as the replacement for the kit lens (which is a good lens by the way - great wide angle aspect), and is in your budget.
I compared the Tamron against the kit lens, shooting the same scene, same focal length (55mm) and the difference was 1/30 sec (kit) vs. 1/125sec (Tamron). F2.8 vs. F5.6 makes a huge difference, allowing you to hand-hold shots the kit lens could never let you do.
I wish I had $$ for Canon's 70-200 F2.8 but the Tamron comes in so close I doubt many would be able to actually see a diffeence. |

There are some good suggestions here. You have to decide if you want longer (zoom to 200 or 300) or lower light (f/2.8).
Also consider geting the canon 50 f/1.8 |
