After reading up on some of Joey's grunge techniques, decided to take the plunge and give it a shot. Whaddaya think? I kinda like the result (at least for my first attempt at portraiture of this type).

Thanks for the good comments so far! In response to some of the questions, I did not cut/paste anything or part of the shot - so, I guess that some of my processing steps must have created this illusion (not that it takes anything at all away from the perception that is obviously apparent - I'll have to work on that!). I had fun with this - VERY different approach to processing, that's for sure! LOL Keep those comments coming - thanks again!

Were did you read up about Joey's grunge effects? That looks mighty cool, I may try learning that technique next. I love what you did with it!

I too would like to know what you did and where you learned how to do that, looks great. I hated the grunge wardrobe but love the grunge photo work.

There was actually an educational forum thread "class" if-you-will on certain techniques that included Joey as a a guest speaker who included a step-by-step directional approach to a specific photograph for his grunge technique. I'm trying to locate the particular thread and will post it here... Please bear with me! I'll find it eventually! :-)

EDIT: I've asked Joey to help me out here too. I know he remembers which forum thread it was and probably still has the link (I should - and probably do - but just can't seem to locate it). I'll post it as soon as I (or someone else) locates it!

Added a "horizontal" version that seemed to be what people wanted too. Still trying to find that forum thread on grunge techniques... I WILL post a link for it here!

YES!!! THANK YOU!!! WHEW! I knew someone would have it close at hand! I went through it repeatedly, but when I wanted to pull it up, I couldn't find it for the life of me! Thank you!

LOL - Thanks! It's not easy for those of us *thirty-plus* year-olds... ;-), but we keep on trying! Ya gotta give us props for chutzpah, if nothin' else!!!

One more shameless bump. I really poured my heart out into these shots in a way I never had before. It was cathartic and invigorating in ways I hadn't possibly imagined... I shared them with my family and *ahem* they REALLY didn't care for any of them. They felt that while they all had a lot of artistic merit, seeing me in this light made them feel uncomfortable - somehow like I'd almost shared too much of myself or my soul in the shots. Well, I guess I can appreciate that from a southern upbringing, but I really wanted to touch on some emotion with these shots - not take some snapshots to send to Grandma for Christmas. :-) Thanks again guys/gals for your opinions.

Would it be possible to see one of the originals before your PS editing?

Jimmy, You my friend are growing as a photographer and artist by leaps and bounds. Not that I am one to judge since I am fairly new but I would say you are the most improved since I first began viewing this site.

PS. Mandy is on your heels.

Okay... Here they are... The only thing I did was convert them to 640x size for Web. :-) (Yes, I know there are some MAJOR differences, but that's what art is all about, right?!?) ;-) LOL

I like the originals better actually, they just need some levels adjustments. don't think the heavy grunge really added anything to them. just made them look cartoonish. 2cents

Well, I actually took them with a "grungy" theme in mind (and used the back of the Buchanan Theatre accordingly as a backdrop). Although I recognize that they may have some other merits, I was primarily focused on their use in this particular setting and with a specific purpose in mind with each shot (most especially with "Hollow").
