Sorry, John. It took me a year and a half to add you to my favorites (gross oversight), and I'm not about to take you off now. ;-P

Though it would be difficult to put an end to the begging, one thing that might make the favorites list at least little more legit would be to have a separate friends list. People have mentioned in the other threads that they use favorites to keep track of their 'DPC friends', i.e. people they like to interact with in the forums, etc. I'd like to see the favorites limited to people who's photography you like, because in my mind, that's what a favorite [i]photographer[i/] is, someone who's photographic work you consistantly enjoy, not someone you like to talk to. It'd be great to be able to have a separate listing for your friends.

I'm personally rather disgusted by all the begging and bribery that's been going on lately. You'd think people could take things a little more seriously...not everything in the world has to be a joke. It almost seems disrespectful to the art of photography, which is suprising on a site that celebrates that artform. Unfortunately, I can't see any way of preventing it. It'd be hard to police that sort of thing.

I would like to see you be able to organize your fav. Like you can your portfolio. Make your own folders for people you select.

This way I could have:

Locals
Favs.
Friends
etc:

Is it me or are you looking way too much into this?

What happened to making art and enjoying the community?

Wanting exposure is actually good, nothing wrong with it. You do it in real life, why not in the internet. And I really am not seeing how it concerns you? Does it hurt you that someone else is begging for pageviews? Are you jealous? Or is someone punching you in face everytime someone adds Skippy to their favorite photographers list?

Just want to shed some light into this.

It bothers me because I want to be able to go to the top favorite photographers and see who others think are excellent photographers, not who whined or bought people memberships.

yeah, about that begging...

i did some pretty serious begging back, uh, like THREE MONTHS AGO...

and it worked! i got a whole bunch of un-earned favorites, because, really, if i was that good of a photographer, i would have EARNED a BOATLOAD of ribbons by now, as well as a lot more faves...

and, for a brief, shining moment, jmsetzler added me to his faves list, but a couple days later, he came to his senses an unfaved me. no biggy; after all, beggars can't be choosers.

so, i'll echo soni here: anyone wanting off john's list can feel free to join mine! sign on up! i have no shame, no compunction, not as much talent as some people, but i am willing to share--no ego, and no strings attached...

go on and fave away!!!

and for those of you who know me to be the a$$ that i am and still have me faved, go on and unfave me. whatever floats your boat. faved or not, i'll still be shooting and sharing.

;-)

Indeed the list is flawed - the top 10 have no right to be there in my view.

That faves list is full of people who have:
> won lots of ribbons;
> produced some good technical photography;
> are wildly creative;
> boosted their popularity from making hundreds of comments;
> gone nuts in Photoshop to the amazement of those who don't know better, or
> partaken in the forums a lot and sent lots of lovely PMs!

Most of them have been here a while too, giving them more probability of being faved.

For me the list is unimportant, but it does show, combined with a knowledge of this site, the range of human traits and photography that people here like. That's all though. Having gone full cycle with DPC photography (novice - break six - ribbon - 'the list') I've come to realise now more than ever that all I want to do is shoot images that are personally fulfilling. Quite frequently now, I find myself underwhelmed by the challenge winners so it matters less and less to win but instead to see how people react to one of my shots. A useful and fun exercise regardless of success.

How it can actually matter being in or out the list beats me.

Now - everyone go and throw some giraffes around.

It's funny the jealousy that rains the threads of those that don't think some should be fav'ed. hmm..

I love this site, great place to make friends and learn. Like Jacko once told me.."Don't take it to personal!" I totally agree with his statement. Life is to short to worry about the little things.

Skiprow..wish I was more involved in the forums to get to know you better..I just might add you as a favorite. hehehe...

Geezzzzzzzz. Now, just like when I favorited Slippy, I will be called a lemming. In honest truth I am just REALLY forgetful.

I agree--I thought about something like that a couple weeks ago (like even adding whole photogs portfolios to your favs, or whole collections inside their portfolio), and was going to maybe start a thread in the site suggestions, but never got around to it. (just so ya know i beatcha to the idea, teehee)

Well John, I've taken you off my 'hallowed' favourites list. I used to think you were some kind of saint for all the great help & advice you give people here. Starting a thread with the intention of being hurtful to me for a gag is not nice at all. I could blow it off if it were from just about anybody else, but from you it's different.
09/29/2005 09:25:45 AM · #39
Sorry, John. You were one of the first people I added to my favorites list cause of your talent and because of comments you made on some of my earliest entries that made my day, helped and encouraged me. Thanks!

Slippy, you were the last person to have been added to my list and I did not so much because of the 'add me' thread but because I could have sworn you were there already. You bring a lot of humor and different viewpoints to the forums and it is really nice to see someone who does not take everything so seriously all the time....and you make me, and others, I'm sure, laugh! I need that from time to time.

So gentleman, you are both there and that is that. You'll both have to deal with how you got there. ;)! LOL!

Who I add to my favourite list is my business. I'm a paid up member of Dp Challenge and I like to see the photos of the photographers that earn the ribbons. I find your comment pretty arrogant and I don't appreciate being Pm'd and told to remove you from my list because you will get offended. (PM'd by "truth4848")

Just got this tonight:

DPChallenge user truth4848 has sent you the following private message:

Please kindly remove "jmzetzler" from your Favourite Photographer
because he does not wish to be in your list. Please do not offend him:

For more information, please read this DPC thread:

Sounds like someone needs to be spanked. Let the admins know this guy is abusing the PM feature.

Oh, and by the way... seems like John..does not want to be part of the list..(as per the Thread) so..OK, he is off mine...
10/10/2005 03:24:21 AM · #49
At least I know that PM wasn't personal if everyone else got one too... I just added HIM to my favourites, too :-)
10/10/2005 03:27:56 AM · #50
Now I feel left out -- I haven't been PM'ed. :(

---

Sorry John, I added you to my fav's list over a year ago when you were the top of the list with no-one else even close. Although I considered dropping you after the fit you threw last year while 'leaving' the site, I decided to keep you on. Sure you can be a bit moody at times, arrogant, whiny, and a bit directionless -- but I figured that was just the way of the artist.

The short answer is I added you because of your photography, not your personality. Nothing your personality can do will remove you from my list -- that would take a change in your photography. I add people because something about their photography has demanded something from me, intentional or not -- I won't remove them until that demand has been met.

It is possible your request for a site change will be met -- but I feel it would make the favorites list a lot less useful if it is.

David
