I put the corkscrew flat on a chair on top of a black sweatshirt. I manually exposed it so I could underexpose slightly to wash out the background to near total darkness...

John,
I want some more contrast -- what I assume to be polished metal is SOOOOOO dark. The problem is in getting a nice range of tones in the picture since there's really only two tones in the shot -- the metal of the bottle opener and the black background....

try holding a white card up in front of the corkscrew so as to pick up those tones in the metal. |
