Wow patience has paid off in huge amounts. I have been shooting for the local paper and taking all the "low end" assignments but, giving them my all as if they were the biggest photos to hit the AP. Today I get a call from my editor and I have been informed that I will be working the Padres vs. Cardinals Playoff game in San Diego at Petco park. Does it get any BIGGER???? Oh my God this is like X-mas when i was 5 years old. I CAN"T STAND THE WAIT!!!!!! |

Well I can finally breath and let everybody know how it went.
I got there early...really early. I wanted to try out my new Press Pass so instead of 6 o'clock it was 4:30 for me. I got my credentials then proceeded to the field level and "poof" the security guard opens the gate and I step on the the field of dreams. Here I stand pre-game at a division playoffs game with the San Diego Padres on the field stretching and taking batting practice. I keep having to tell myself "Breath". But, even more important I have to keep telling myself "STOP STARING AND TAKE PICTURES DUMMY". Anyway overall the entire night went great. I was hired by St. Louis Post Dispatch (sister paper) as a runner for their photogs. I found this out the day of the game. So I arranged to bring my own equipment and shoot when poosible. It worked out awesome. I got some amazing shots and I was able to watch the pros shoot a big game and learned what it takes to work an event of that magnitude. I am so glad I wasn't there to photograph the game because after what I saw I would have blown it. There are so many things you have to be aware of and I had no idea of any. I even got to sit next to my idol photog Hayne Palmour IV who shoots at our paper. During the game I had to drop cards at the media room. We shared a room with the AP and this is where possibly the best thing that could have ever happened to me... happened. The director of photog from the Post knows the dir. of photo from the local AP. Appearantly they used to work together. Anyway he tells me he will introduce me and tell her he highly recommends me for work. So I got to meet the director of photog for the local AP with a big recommendation. So here I sit today with an opportunity of a life time. I am wondering if I could get some help from my fellow DP'ers. I need to put together a knockout portfolio. So can I borrow some pictures? Hahaha just kidding can I get some advice before I send what I put together? I don't want to blow this by sending in something that just won't be relevant. Any suggestions would be great.

First of all, a whopping congratulations to you. Such wonderful things have happened. You seem to be in a really good place; wishing you luck with of your future opportunities.
Second... through the 'seriousness' of your posts - this just made me crack up! My dogs look at me funny when I'm home alone and start laughing out loud. :-)

Actually the first one is a decent portrait shot.
The other two - well, let's just say someday when you are rich & famous, they just may resurface on a magazine cover next to the check-out in a grocery store somewhere...
Muhahahahahahaha |

That's fun man. For your portfolio show them your shots with the most emotion, action, and aesthetic quality. Simply what you feel are your best shots. If you don't have enough then chill for a minute and get more shots you are proud of before your submit something your only half stoked about.
Also demonstrate the ability to consistently produce.
I'm in the running to be photo editor of my 20,000 circulation campus paper here, and I can say we have some photogs who produce a sweet image from time to time, but the best ones produce good images every assignment, no matter what it is. They may not always be amazing due to the content of the assignment, but to show you can make something out of nothing is a desirable skill. |
