this is true in many asian countries.

8 is lucky. 4 is half of 8 and considered VERY unlucky.

In Japan, the word for four is "Shi" and this mean death. So many hospitals and hotels don't have fouth floors or room numbers with the number four in them. A student told me the other day, he works for NTT Docomo, a phone company, that all the staff get the mobile phone numbers using 4 in them, cause no one else wants them! One of the company benefits!!

Finally submitted mine. It took more than 500 exposures over 2 day's, but I've got one. :-)
Imagine doing that with film............

I hope next week's challenge is something like:
"Take your best shot of your Christmass Dinner's plate." While I go upstairs post processing, someone else can do the dishes. :-)

Most any of the regulars would agree that photos of children are frowned upon? Really?
Funny that I haven't been told that. I think that people often shoot what they have handy. I just happen to have some beautiful children in the family so they end up in a lot of my photos. As long as it fits the challenge, what's so bad about that? Ten years from now, I can guarantee you that I would rather have a cute photo of my niece than a great photo of a keyboard or an apple.

No doubt. Although I still believe that most of the regulars vote photos with children/pets in them less favorably, with few exceptions of course.

I agree that there might be some predictable images, but who cares it's the DPchallenge not the DP Original not the obvious please challenge. I encourage all to take a shot of the #4 on a key pad. Best executed shot wins. That would be even more challenging, true?

Let me go ahead and post the next person's response since I've managed to turn everyone against me.


Yeah, but my children are beautiful and I don't care whether anyone votes my photos high or not. My love for my children is always a percect 10.


I agree with Fibre Optix... let's have a challenge of the boring and obvious. Where 'creative execution' will be the only way to seperate yourself from the noise.

I've never submitted a photo here -- with or without my kid -- which I'd give a 10. So what?

How is saying "I give a lower vote to photos with kids in them" any different than giving a lower vote to photos with people of color in them, or women, or Jews, or dogs, or snapdragons, or any other group or class identified by some in a negative light (pun intended)?

I try to look past my own prejudices and biases, for example against guns and violence, and to evaluate whether the artist effectively conveyed their message, even if it's a message with which I disagree. And I can appreciate the esthetics of arms and armor, while still desiring them all to be relegated to museums as antiquities.

I have no problem with people admitting their own biases, only with exalting them rather than confronting and overcoming them.

I finally settled on my submission, and I'm VERY happy with it. Plus, I haven't seen the subject mentioned anywhere in this thread! ;)

On the topic of originality, I really dont care how "original" a photo is. While I always like creativity, I'll give any photo a good score, as long as it's well composed, well lit, and has proper focus, and good use of color (or lack of).

I wanted to add: I wonder how many pictures we'll see that are plays on the word "four" or "fore", that have nothing to do with the actual number. I predict, more than one :)
