Just read thru your post. I get the drift, but you have to understand you submit, the editor decides where it goes!

Right, I would contact the editor and have a friendly chat about how you are pleased they want to use your shot for their feature/spread. Explain that it wasn't quite the section you expected it to be in, but hey! you want it. Suggest that the suggested fee was below what you expected, but as a one off deal, with the prospect of future work, you will grant them a one-off licence for $150 including tax. Then, ask what other sort of shots they are looking for in the future and suggest they contact you with rates and possible commissions.

If you have never been published before... suck it up and go with it.

Unless you are an established photographer with a track record behind you, you can't expect to get paid big bucks for your photography... you have to establish yourself and build out a resumse of published material.

Sometimes that means letting people publish your work at reduced prices (or even *GASP* for free). It will help you in the long run and it isn't costing you anything to get good exposure.

Wow, lots of good advice here thanks again! Theres a lot more to the business side of photography than I knew during the first meeting, but know I know a whole lot more. And yes, next time, I'm a seasoned professional freelancer, not a student with a regular day job.

It could, possibly. Everyone working out there disagrees with you, though.

See if you can find somebody who has FotoQuote to give you the real value of having your photograph used in the way you describe. FotoQuote is the industry standard pricing guide for photography assignments.

What?? When I started writing for local papers I never gave anything for FREE! They said send us sample articles and we will fit them in. I said, okay, I will send you a weekly column of 500/1000 words, but I need something to cover my costs, ie postage, internet time(dialup/payasyou go). They would always come back with something, even if it was $20/25 for postage etc.

FREE isn't a word I know, unless it is something I want from someone.

Yep, good recommendation for a long term solution.

when i asked for some photo submissions for the mag i work for, i made it clear we were looking for people looking for publishing credits, not big bucks. That was for a free magazine though.

is this a trade journal? free magazine? expensive glossy? not all magazines are going to have the same rate of pay for a photo.

don't underestimate the value of a published photo with your name [and website?] next to it.

Just a quick check on Alamy (where I sell my stock photos) gave me a price of $385 for a 1 page, inside, conumer magazine spread, up to 500,000 copies for a weekly magazine ($415 for a monthly magazine). Considering that an agency would take 35% - 60%, I'd negotiate off of that. I regularly check their pricing when I'm figuring out what to charge.

(By comparison, a magazine with a circulation of 10,000 came up with a price of $285... just FYI.)

If you sell it off cheap then; One good idea I have seen mentioned (sorry I forget who but I think it was here) is to show the full price with a heavy discount. May not help much but next time it give you a look I have you an 80% discount last time because of but I need to reduce the discount this time - may not work but at least gives you a way in.
