My daughter is not really into photography, but into animations and illlustrations. She is a freshman at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. She is trying to decide which MAC laptop to purchase. If anyone here has any suggestions please share.

for animations I'd say the 15" powerbook, and max out the ram, I have the 12" powerbook and use it for photo and animationwork, but the display is really to small for any real work, but the 15" is great, the 17" is huge, but if size and weight doesn't bother her, then go for the bigger screen, but te smart thing would be the 15" for school and an external display to work on at home :)

I agree the powerbook is a monster machine.. I have the iBook 1ghz 12" with 1gb RAM I use it for photos of cause but it lacks the bit of UMMMPH!!! that the POWERBOOK can deliver. The important thing with a MAC is to get the RAM up to 1 gb then it starts to fire on all 8 cylinders.

If cash is a problem then the iBook is a good machine and will also serve the purpose very well.

Tell her not to forget she gets an educational discount if she's a student.

I'd suggest the 15" powerbook as well. Ibook's are ok, but for her purposes the powerbook will be worth the extra money.

you can also use an external monitor in combination with any mac laptop.

the 12" is far too small, i think, even for everyday work. and we did have one woman who chose an ibook over a powerbook at work (i think she wanted it to be white), and it was not very powerful at all. it worked ok for her because she was a writer so she really just surfed the 'net and used office, but it had no "poop" whatsoever. :)

student discounts are nice.

Another vote for 15" Powerbook. Movie making, Painter, Photoshop(huge poster work) all no problem for me and that's with a two year old machine. I suppose I could live without it but I don't want to find out.

Caveat- My friend who is the only professional illustrator I know (video games and books) uses a maxed out Dell laptop and a 12" graphics pad so I guess ultimately it's familiarity with what you know.

for audio/video editing the ibook lacks the most important thing, the firewire800 bus, that is one of the most important ting in audio/video editing, since the internal harddrive will only hold a few minutes of HQ video.

the 15" powerbook with minimum 1GB ram and superdrive wil go a far way in video editing, there have been some big Hollywood movies edited on powerbooks and G5's, just get an external LCD for home work :)

and get a LaCie D2 firewire800 external harddrive for videofiles.

I have a 17" powerbook that I just love! I agree with some of the other posters, make sure that whatever one she gets has a super drive. Being able to burn DVD's will go a long way with animation. I got mine sure cheap through my college bookstore. Education discounts are awesome!
