I'm curious if people really don't like this shot or if it was mostly people who thought it didn't meet the challenge. I took a 2 second exposure of some bubbles against a black background and got this:
If you'd known it were bubbles would it have made a difference, or do you still think it's crap. :) |

Was it that it was abstract? |

I like the photo, but even though the colors are made by bubbles, I really wanted to see a bubble. If one of the strands of light had a bubble at the end I bet you would have done a lot better. |

together with another line that was the only thing he had to say, ain't that dumb..
anyway, I commented while voting. I like the effect the bubbles make with a long exposure. It's something else then "roundy bubbly type thingies" ;-) |

I think a rearsync flash would have been a good ideea - to see also the bubbles.
edit: personally I love abstracts but I must say that this one doesn't impress me too much.

I didn't vote bubbles, but I would have had trouble giving this one a good score. I do think it's at the very edge of "challenge met". When I say that, I mean more that it's hard to quickly see it meets the challenge rather than it doesn't in reality (in reality, of course it does, they were bubbles after all).
The picture itself lacks balance or flow. I think abstracts rely on a color scheme, a flow of pattern, or a balance of design to be appealing. This pic lacks any of those, although I can see promise because I think some of the colors captured in the streaks are very appealing; they just don't involve enough of the canvas.
That's just my honest opinion...
BTW, nice to see someone from Woodinville, where I grew up (on Bear Creek Rd). |

I noticed that the user/member made alot of "No comment" or "Does not tell me anything" comments and an occasional cryptic comment... very strange I think to go through the process of making a comment like those... Not very helpful at all...

Well he's new. Maybe give him the benefit of the doubt. I think maybe he just felt like he had to put something in the comment box in order to vote? |

Maybe so Ttreit...
To answer your question (first I do not claim to be a pro photog by any means, so take my advice with a grain of salt... LOL), I would have given your photo a higher score if there had been visible, obvious bubbles...

Thanks for the comments, that helps. Good point about using all of the canvas and about what makes abstracts "work."
Been in Woodinville a couple years now and really like it. It's one of the last places on the Eastside that feels like it has a lot of community and isn't just a bunch of strip malls. I live about a mile or so SW of the library.
