..and I just gave my girlfriend the E-300 for Christmas (early). Oh well, it just means that the cost of the E-300 will go even lower still.
I was impressed by the E-300, and the E-500 looks all the better. I know it is a definate underdog when compared to Canon and Nikon, but it is by no means a second-class camera.
I hope more people start to recognize these cameras as being as good as they are.
Too bad BradP jumped off of the Olympus ship...he would have been a good one to have. Maybe we can win over some of the young-bloods like Joey or Anna. :)

Pretty impressive camera for the price. And the Olympus lens line up has now reached 16. They offer some very nice lenses with generally faster apertures than Canon's newer offerings. The ISO range goes up to 3200 with a new noise reduction filter. It has a 2.5 inch LCD. Only drawback I could find was the modest burst speed rate of 2.5 fps. That's on the slow side for sports action and some wildlife shooting, but otherwise very acceptable. With it's Supersonic Wave dust filter, the E-500 seems a very viable alternative to Canon and Nikon.

Olympus EVOLT E-500
Hmmmm....gonna get something soon....but nothing is actually out yet...I wanna SLR but I am so used to P&S that the Fuji S9000 just may be next. The Oly may top it cause the design of the E-500 looks more practical than the oblong E-300...though the E-300 did not feel so bad when I held one with the 40-150 lens on it...nice weight. Also the range of the cam with the two lens kit is enticing, but I'll still need a macro lens...new one of them coming to! ARGH....just don't know. I just may end up getting both! (uh oh...here comes "for the price of both you could get" comments from the Canon/Nikon camps!)

I have no slr lens' so I have no need to buy any specific brand of camera. THis looks like a great camera at a decent price and since I have XD cards from my Fuji I wont have to buy a new set of cards. I am also looking at the Samsing Pro1015 and like you I may buy both one for P&S and a DSLR. |

It looks nice, but it's hard to tell untill some image samples are available. I'm curious how it will be at supressing noise. The Image quality of thhe E-300 lagged behind the newer XT, and D50, so I'm curious if oly will catch up. |

I really liked my Olympus...
Had this unit been out last April I think I might have considered it. |

From what I've read here, the built-in ultrasonic sensor cleaning system would seem a very strong selling point too. |

Olympus will also be coming out with a new professional model in February (to be announced at PMA 06), the E-3. will probably be 10 to 12 MPs and rumor has it that they have licensed Konica-Minolta's Anti-Shake technology...at least that's going around the rumor mill in the Olympus forums on DPReview. |

Well good thing I still haven't been able to afford the 300 like I wanted. Wonder why they went back to the pentaprism instead of the flat top on the 300. Man I still want it though.

Interesting to see how they combine that with the cleaning system which "shakes" the sensor 35,000/second. |

Konica-Minolta and Sony joining forces to make the first Sony Dslr. So they may use that new 10megapixel APS-class sized Sony CMOS image sensor in the new R1 or a new CMOS from the newly built CMOS factory. |

I'm pretty sure Olympus will stick with the 4/3 sensor/system, else they will tick off pretty much every single one of the converts they have already made to their slr's. I like the concept of 4/3, it makes a lot of sense, but so does the metric system, and a lot of people (ok, mostly just Americans) still don't go for that.

Yes it does, but the main reason we don't is cause we can't conceptualize it. If we started putting speed limit signs in English & Metric. First with small numbers, then slowly increase the metric numbers and decrease the size of the mile numbers we'd start moving to it much more easily.

I do hope that people take notice of this camera and Olympus SLR's in general. They have some extremely nice features, and for the everyday shooter, can be a good, strong option.
The build quality on the E-300, and I'm sure the E-500 was hard to beat for a consumer SLR. It's durable and well made, but it's not submersible, so you choose your tool for your application.
Olympus SLR's seem like unknowns, or barely knowns, at the least. They are high quality, inovative, usable cameras that are just under the radar. If they incorporate anti-shake with the dust filter, they will have a major advantage over Canon and Nikon.

My Olympus E-20N's build quality blew my Canon 20D out of the water.
Tank compared to a Humvee....(best way I can describe it)) |
