When asked how to make great photo's, Allan Hopkins replied simply: "F/8 and be there"

Does this mean:

A "Stop Pixel Peeping/sweating the technical issues at home and get your butt on the street and start shooting"

B "F/8 is a good setting for photojourno work giving reasonable dof while still allowing fast enough shutter speed in general situations"

C "F/8 is a special place, 2 stops down from open, where the lens performs optimally"

What do you think?

I think the emphasis is on the words "be there", so my interpretation is A.

I think "A" too, but only because of "B".

Actually, I meant that all 3 are correct, at least on some level. There is not a totally incorrect, or even more correct, statement in the bunch.

I would say A, B, and C. All three. But I agree that the emphasis is on the "be there" part.

A and B

2 stops down from open... not with the glass used by these traditional photojournalists.

The key is "and"... "F/8 is a great all-around aperture for adequate DOF and a reasonable shutter speed; don't sweat the technicalstuff, in photojournalism the REAL skill is to be there when it happens and be ready."

"Luck is the residue of design" and "Chance favors the prepared" and "You can't shoot it if you ain't there" come to mind...

I'd say A.. With a modern(ish) camera of the film or digtal kind, and a reasonable level of skill the biggest hurdle has for a long time being there....

A...because I like to say "f/2.8 and be there" - but I guess I'm just 8 times brighter than he was...
