So... I was playing in PhotoShop tonight and wanted to see if I could "save" an image that had very poor lighting, and poor white balance to boot. Shot as jpeg so no RAW advantage either.

Anyway, take a look and tell me what you think...

Before: After:

When I look at the After image all by itself, I really like it. But if I see them side by side, I am convinced that the After image is too pale. (trick of the mind?)

The truth is, I had originally converted the image to black and white. And only later decided to bring some of the color back into the image. But I didn't want the harshness of the original color, so I only brought in the tiniest amount of color ... enough to see the blues of her eyes and the red in her lips.

So... tell me what you think. And then, if anyone has any alternative PhotoShop ideas, feel free to experiment and share.

I looked at the after version first, and I think it's too pale and blue. I'm no PS expert, but sometimes I get good results by playing with the grey sampler in the curves dialogue. After some clicking around, I usually find a good, or at least interesting, white balance.

I didn't find the after too light at all the image appears on my monitor to have a slight pink glow to her skin, eyes have a nice blue and background although light does not appear washed out. I say excellent job (especially considering where you started from) NOTE: my monitor is not set to adobe gamma 1.8 or 2.1 colors do appear richer on it. Have you printed it?

The after is much better! But, I do think it's a bit pale.

Here's my stab at it:

Good save!!! I thought I'd give it a stab myself, being that I have nothing better to do. I went the desat route first... started with silver but wound up a little bit more blue...and used a soft filter too. Just one idea off the top of my head.

Then I tried a color version, rather muted and washed out but something different just for fun. :)

(Digital Image Pro 10)

Desaturated (quite a bit)
Blemish Brush (a couple of spots)
Dodge around eyes
Messed with Shadows and Mids

Tried Noise reduction but too easy to plastic on this one so I dropped that idea.

If I only look at mine and don't compare it to others, I still tend to prefer my own attempt. BUT... if I rapidly switch back and forth between images, my attempt just feels too pale.

Of the attempts posted by others, so far, I think I like the colors in cdcootie's best:

Here's a somewhat different take on it. It could be done better with a larger original and more attention to the dark areas under here eyes especially, but this was as far as I was eager to go...
