sorry, no. Here's a clue. This type of clue has one part of the sentence as a literal definition of the answer and the other part is a cryptic definition...

What's the meaning of the (3,4,2) in context?

You are right and I was typing it and stopped. Your fingers were too quick.

(And no I don't read The Times - we have The Telegraph and I like their crossword.)

Are crosswords in the USA like these?

You have to search for Cryptic Crosses in the US. I guess most of us aren't into the punning that it takes to solve a Cryptic.

Riponlady, I believe every word you say. I don't read the Times either. The Beano is my level. But I have a lateral mind and sit and mull over the clues until it pops into my head. Trouble is, once it gets into my head, that's usually the end of it.

What does "get shot of" have to do with a ditch? I'm feeling rather retarded.

Get...manage to get. Shot...photograph! Ditch, get rid of something, or get shot of something.

Maybe I was unfair in using this one...in the UK we use 'get shot of' to mean 'get rid of'. So to get shot of something can mean to 'ditch' it. That's the trick of these clues as you immediately think of an earth 'ditch'.

...and well done Riponlady!!

edit typo

You do have to practise doing them and then you gradually get a feel for the way certain crossword writers work. That's why I said I did the Telegraph crosswords ( and to say I hadn't seen the clue before tonight.)

They really get the brain moving!

Laurie, if you "ditch" something you get rid of it and another phtrase for" get rid of " is to " get shot of" it.
Could be an English idiom.
