And there's still 282 in the queue. What's the percentage of people requesting vs. entries in a challenge? I think it's a failure as an idea, and should be acknowledged as such. Anyone who wants to write in depth about a photograph can easily select one from the archive, and I suspect that most critiques go straight through their recipients without touching the sides anyhow. |

For the number of the personal emails I've gotten thanking me expressly for the critiques I've given, I can't ever call this idea a failure. You suggest that we can just choose a photograph from the archives.. well.. sure we can, and many do. However, that leaves people to choose photos that they *want* to critique, and that leads to people only choosing either really good photos, or just plain growing bored.
The fact that I get a random photo to critique with just a click of a button is quite a positive thing. I don't choose, and I can help myself by learning how best to try and help the photographer of the photo that came up. I don't get to just arbitrarily throw it back into the jumble. It's the one I'm stuck with until change-over(if I choose not to critque it), and this helps more photos get critiqued than just simple pick-and-choosing from the archives.
No, the system isn't perfect. I suspect too many people just click that critique button out of habit.. or don't really know what they're clicking.. but if my efforts result in only a fraction of the people I critique being genuinely helped or happy that I would give them that time.. then hell, it's worth it to me.
It's no failure of an idea, and it certainly isn't hurting anything or anyone regardless. If you don't like it, that's fine, nobody is forcing anything.. but for the rest of us, we do it because we want to, and there's some satisfaction from that.. the negativity helps nobody.

I guess its a choice made by us who may wish, or not wish, to see the endeavor as a failure. Your choice is clear. |

Artyste, I just finished reading through about a dozen of your critiques. You are very thorough and thoughtful. You're a good model for the rest of us. |

Why thank you. I'm still learning as I go too though. :) |

Don't fret...I've gotten emails from people thanking me for what a wonderful HELPFUL critique I gave them on their photo, and see the box not checked, so just cause they didn't check it, doesn't mean they didn't find it helpful. |
That's why I follow up with a simple email a few days later asking if there was anything I could have done to make it a more helpful critique. It serves as both a little reminder (in case they didn't get my initial email notification), and as a potential learning tool for myself.. who knows, maybe the person I critiqued *does* have some good ways I can improve, or at least something for me to ponder.

All good advice Artyste! And you do give very good critiques. (So do you Scott!) Thanks from my little corner of the world! :-)

That little box "give me an image to critique" gives me the biggest thrill. I don't know what I'm going to get, and before clicking the box, I wonder if I can do this next one justice.
And then, spending some time on the image and the previous comments and the maker's profile, in some cases wondering what the story is behind the image, well, it's all a great experience.
I'm having a ball.
I will say though, even though I'm delighted to look at the best of the best, it seems to me that if someone has gotten 20 or so comments, and has scored well, it wouldn't hurt that person to uncheck the critique box to give someone who really needs one a better chance at getting one. |
