Uh oh.. you've come down with a case of lens disease, particularly evident by the symptoms of lovesthesharpnessitis. :P

Wow! A lens that has Un Sharp Mask built in - cool!

Just kidding... the envious green look on me is quite the look.

7.491 that is a tough challenge probably will never happen especially from someone like me. I will try though.

For what it's worth, I damned near just bought this baby for myself, when I saw how fine it was, with a nice case and a filter and a hood and all... But I'd promised James, and I have my integrity, so...

You could have said you dropped it after checking it I would've believed ya. Too late now though.

Lemme jump on this bandwagon, for two reasons!

Yup, I have the 85mm f1.8 and love it. It's great for low light sports shooting.

But more importantly I want to add my thanks to the bear man for helping me complete the purchase of a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and Sigma 2x teleconverter from his friend. The price was reasonable, they arrived promptly and very well packed, and the condition was even better than anticipated. THANKS Robert for a very smooth transaction.

Can't wait to shoot with them.

My feelings exactly. Got it quick, packaged with care, and better than I thought. Robert and his friend far exceeded any expectations I had.

I told her last Saturday to put it under her pillow. She hid it. She chose to keep it and not have the tooth fairy come the first time around.

Since I'm new to buying lenses, what kind of pictures can you take with the 85mm? Is this one better to get than the macro 60mm or the macro 100mm?

edited to say that I just looked on the forum to see what pics were taken with it. It looks like you can do portraits AND landscapes? And with an extension tube you can do macro?

You can do anything with any lens, really, as far as subjects go. You can put extension tubes on any lens and focus closer. If you like long-focal-length landscapes, you can shoot 'em with a telephoto lens. If you like distorting facial features you can do up-close, exaggerated head shots with a wide angle lens.

The 85mm lens is a very nice portrait lens for a lot of people; it gives a good working distance for headshots, and its wide aperture allows creative use of shallow DOF. The lens has a reputation for being VERY sharp. Some people think that's a liability in portraiture, some love it.

It's all a matter of what you want to do.

Robt.

Edit to add: if you want macro capability on-demand, either the 60mm or the 105mm is an exceptionally nice lens. The 60mm is lighter and shorter by quite a bit. It won't work on a full-frame-sensor camera, but I doubt that's a concern for you; you're not planning on upgrading anytime soon, right? I'm very fond of my 60mm macro lens, which I bought instead of the 85mm precisely because it IS a macro lens. But it's VERY sharp also and it works just fine all the way to infinity, as do nearly all macrolenses currently on the market except for a few very specialized technical lenses.

Thanks Robert! At this point, since the only one I have is the 17-85mm, that's the only one that I have any experience with. lol But....I'm learning! :) (& a friend gave me a book on lenses recently, so I've been looking through that.) Hopefully, the Sigma 70-200 that I ordered will come in around Tues-Thurs.
