I've been sent a check from ShutterStock. Possibly another one in the next month or 2. Not bad for 2-3 megapixels pictures.

IMO the stock sites are not worth the hassle.

Microstocks $0.50-$1.00 a download or whatever you may get more downloads as long as you have a good # of photos. They may require lower resolution images. You don't have to have 100's of shots to submit to these sites.

Some stock sites you may get $30 + for each shoot but only get a low # of downloads. These sites may require higher mega-pixel images. Some sites may require you to upload some images to see if you are good enough for their site. Sometimes they require you to send them 100's of pictures before they will accept you.

There are + and - with each kind of sites. Read the FAQs before submitting and if you agree with them then you can try them out. Most sites will let you pull your images, some will keep your $ if it doesn't reach a certain point.

As has been stated, some people do. Search the forums for "microstock" for an exhaustive discussion of the practical and ethical pros and cons of this approach.

But recognize that for those of us with smaller/less-sophisticated cameras, most "real" stock sites are simply not an option -- our photos will not qualify.

Likewise, many designers needing a photo cannot afford either the fees or the paperwork hassle associated with Rights-Managed stock, and will accept a smaller/lower-quality photo in exchange for price and cenvenience.

Note that huge numbers of graphic artists have been put out of work, once corporations got their administrative assistants to design brochures in Illustrator or whatever, yet there's still a market for both high-end and "mom-n-pop" design shops. Photography is simply following the path of desktop publishing, trailing by a few years.

So far this year I've made
$556.23 on Shutterstock
$547.30 on iStockphoto

Just for all the curious number people out there, so far today i've made $6.01 on shutterstock and $6.60 on istock... and so far this month i've made $99.67 on shutterstock and $96.40 on istock. For shits and giggles in January I made $21.26 on Shutterstock and $8.70 on istock.

Is microstock worth it? Yes!
Can you make money from microstock? Yes!
Is it a lot of work? Yes, at the beginning... just like anything else. Learning is a big part of the process. But the rewards are good. I made 12 dollars today without lifting a finger.
