I wasn't disappointed with my place, but I am bewildered as to why I received so many "ones" (9) and "twos" (9) when other entries in the same percentile got no ones or twos.
Could someone that gave me a one give me critique?

This does NO WAY deserve a 1, but the voters are a funky bunch my friend.. try not to let them get under your skin. this is a great shot.

Didn't vote in this challenge and I agree it doesn't deserve a 1.....The problem I see though is the person in the photo is a little out of focus and the cat is spot on. You also thought outside the box and that usually doesn't score well here. |

It's a great idea but the execution could have been better. The light is harsh and the focus on the woman is off. |

More than OOF or DOF issues is the cat doesn't appear to be looking at the "prey". IMHO though it doesn't deserve a 1, 2, or even a 3.

Just curious but you got more 9's and 10's then 1's and 2's so what exactly was your frustration. Do you think it deserved a 9 or 10? I had given it a 5( below your final..sorry) thinking cool idea but not well executed.

Thanks for your comment. I certainly didn't expect 9 or 10s for it, but can't understand why so many would give it 1s or 2s when other images in the same percentile got none. One person commented that they can't even see any perspective!
I gave myself a 5 for this, as it was not the image that I really invisaged. Very happy with the the scores over 6 though! |

I agree that this does not deserve a 1, but I don't agree at all that this is a great shot. It is a good concept but very poorly executed. There are some sort of jpeg artifacts all over the place. The cat isn't looking the right direction for the perspective to be effective, and the DOF is too shallow. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but we get no where if people just say "great shot" instead of pointing out how to make it better when it is flawed.

Conceptually outstanding (the 9's and 10's). Technically quite poor and, arguably, does not meet the challenge (the 1's and 2's).
I'm NOT saying it doesn't meet the challenge, it's just that I can see how many people would not think it did. people were expecting to see vanishing points, receding perspective, zoom-and-ahhh shots, and this one is totally off-the-wall in that context.
You got a GREAT score for such an out-of-the-box image. be happy :-)

The perspective challenge kinda bugged me this time too. I did get the highest score I've ever recieved but I also got more 1s 2s and 3s than any other. I don't mind that but it REALLY bothers me that NONE of them said why they voted so low. (Oh, any comments on mine would be awesome. =)

Let me add another reason - the background is not that good for the shot, the three wires hurt it. That said I still gave you a six.
But I suspect that some didn't care for this interpretation of perspective. My image played a similar game of near vs far - I did not do as well as you did but the one comment that said the most early on was
"nice, but probably going to score below its value in 'perspective'"
edited for spelling..........

You usually have good things to say bear, but I'm gonna disagree here. The technique being used, after all, is called "forced perspective"... |

Did you not read my second paragraph?

Earlier on I said that I thought "forced perspective" was a valid approach to this topic. The comment you quoted out of context included "arguably"; it seems to me that a LOT of voters did not score well images that didn't incorporate the "zoom-and-ahh" concept of "perspective".
In short, we're in agreement here, Doc.

You got the same number of 9s and 10s, are you complaining about that too? I didn't vote on your image, but I would guess those who did vote had their own personal opinions and reasons. Everyone isn't going to like every image, just a fact of life. |

I would of given it a 1 or 2...I like the concept, but photographically it's not done well. |

I agree this photo does not deserve a 1 or 2. However I am also bitter because I recieved an obscene amount of 1s and 2s and some rather nasty comments on my submission for this challenge also. Who knows. |

I would guess that some of those low scores assumed that this is a photoshop composite and didnt bother to ask for a validation, just took it upon themselves to vote it as if it deserved a DQ. |

Like I said before, I don't think this image is great, and potentially I can do a lot better. I would have given this image a 5 myself.
What I can't understand is why so many ones and twos and no comments for the reason. I really appreciate constructive criticism and really enjoying the comments being posted here. I'm definitely not complaining about the 9s and 10s!
I feel sorry for Troutbear and his Perspective entry. He has some really horrible comments and are in no way constructive. I thought it was a good image and gave it a six, but it would have been better placed in Naked II. Not a very nice welcome to DP, but rest assured most of us are not like some of those other members. Keep up the good work!!! |

Bandit, thanks for the support. I am not one to critique the work of others when I have so much to learn myself but that bieng said I will go ahead and open my big mouth. I feel that your entry definatly leans toward the silly side, meaning humorous and intended. If indeed this is what you were going for I would have like to have seen this played up a little more. Perhaps a silly fearfull pose from the victim. I hope this helps. Thanks again for your support.

I think that a big part of the problem is that some voters seem either unable or unwilling to "think outside of the square" and sometimes take to literal an interpretation of the challenge theme. Accordingly their vote reflects their restriction |

Troutbear - I thought your perspective photo was fabulous! Sometimes it is worth looking at the comments certain people made for other pics to get an idea of where they are! I checked the profile of one of your most vehement commentators, when she gave me a hard time on my shoes entry. Once I did I realised that the comment came from someone who is probably very young and so I could understand why the comment was made! Made me laugh and give thanks for maturity but at the same time know we were all very ideological and naive when we were young!
