You go, Slippy! I have to agree that according to how I understand the challenge, the name of the photo is not what the photo depicts, but rather in which category you would find it in a greeting card section.
With the way I'm tanking lately, I think "Disappointment" needs to be a catefory for me. ha ha ha ha ha |

so "Just Because-Blank" is a legitimate title! I'm sorted now. |

I'd just like to remind everybody about a couple of recent challenges that had similar controversies over titles:
D&L: People were arguing that the title of the shot better be D____ & L____ or else they were scoring low. Others thought that D____ L____ would be acceptable (with no 'and'). Well, a few in the top ten, and even one of the ribbon winners went against the strict D&L interpreation -- Probably because they were the best photos.
Time Capsule: The challenge said that the title should be the year that you are trying to capture for future generations. Again, there was another heated title discussion. Some people went as far to say that if the title had even one character in it that wasn't part of the year, the shot would instantly be rated a one. Well, half of the top 10, and two of the ribbon winners went against the convention.
I don't know...maybe I'm being as petty as all of those who are having these title arguements. But as you can see, we can argue all we want about what the title of our photos should be, or you can spend that time putting together a great photo that fits the challenge well, like these people did. |

There are several professional photographers here. I'm also quite sure there are several pro wannabees. If given an assignment as a pro, isn't it imperative that you capture the image that your employer wants, or is it OK to come close? I try to follow what I think is the stricter possible defination for the challenge. It quite often takes me into areas of photography I'm not really familiar or comfortable with...thats called learning. Trying my best to adhere the rules can't be a bad thing. It certainly is more fulfilling than bending the rules to hopefully add .5 to my overall rating. David

On Safari...
A big game hunter goes on safari with his wife and his mother-in-law. One morning, the wife wakes up to find her mother gone. Immediately, she awakens up her husband and they both set off to find the old woman.
Suddenly, they break into a clearing and there's the mother-in-law, standing face-to-face with a ferocious lion!
"Quick, darling," the wife shouts frantically, "Do something!"
"Oh, no," the husband says, "That lion got himself into this mess. Let him get himself out". |

I think this is a dangerous oversimplification. It's not *just* about taking photos; it's about taking photos that meet specific requirements. Yeah, the challenge description says "should," not "must," but the whole premise has always been that you're free to enter off-challenge photos if you want. They're just telling you what the rules are; you're free to break them if you please.
One of the biggest peeves I have with this site is the huge number of people who do NOT follow the instructions of the challenge, and submit photos completely unrelated to the challenge theme and give titles that stray far from what the challenge descriptions suggest.
The game is not fun when people don't abide by the rules. |

True. I used to play Battleship all the time with my wife, but NEVER won. After years of playing she finally admitted to moving her ships. We haven't played Battleship since.

I thought this was a photography site not a grammar site. Does it really matter what the title is on any of them? Are we not supposed to vote and rate the photographs? Yes the photos should be within the challenge objective but the title should have nothing to do with voting. There are a lot of people who are talking about leaving because of this type of stupidity. Iy you think the title matters then do everyone a favor and don't look at the titles anymore. If the photos is inside the box and if the photos is "good or bad" then give it a present or a lump of coal. I know much of these type of discussions are just because most of us are bored silly and can't sleep at night. I hope when it comes to critiques and voting we look at the photo only.
Now everyone go take your medicine and go to bed ;)

On this challenge it does. Very seldome do I take the title into consideration.

See above.

First I doubt they will leave and second I think it has more to do with other issues then healthy discussions in the forums (as they can CHOOSE to ignore certain threads).

Advice like this is only going to make me look at the title more now just to see how people try to make the photo FIT a challenge thru a title and vote accordingly.

funny, I believe this thread started this morning and can't help but wonder if people like you actualy read the whole post. There is nothing wrong with this discussion and I believe even rex understands where I was coming from as he has at least read what I said. As for being bored silly, I have a date tonight and no way will I be bored (or at least I better not be). With that being said I gotta hit the shower then go get me some.

I am fairly new here so don't bite miy head off for commenting, but it does say REFER. I was under the impression, Before I read any of this forum. That it was ok to be more that one or two words as long as it went along with one of the card catagories. Any thought on that??? |

Yes, we're supposed to rate the photographs.
Yes, the titles do matter.
Take the Time Capsule challenge, for instance--titles were an essential part of the presentation. Same thing for the billboard challenge. And the D&L challenge. And the same thing for this.
Have you ever noticed the titles that Dali gave his paintings? They definitely affect the way the art itself is viewed.
Take a look at this image: artwork by Andres Serrano
If its name weren't Piss Christ, would you look at it differently? Does it make a different to you to know that this is a picture of a plastic crucifix in a jar of the artist's urine?
Labels are very important. |
