From the challenge description:
Your title should refer to the section the card would appear in the store, i.e. Birthday, Anniversary, Friendship, Sympathy, etc.

How many card sections are going to become descriptive all of a sudden, with you know, maybe 4,5,...6 or more words? This should be fun. ;^)
09/19/2005 07:52:42 AM · #2
Probably not many more than we get normally.
09/19/2005 08:06:42 AM · #3
You mean then about half of the entries will have more than 3 words in their titles? ;^)

Like 'Weeping Willow at Waldon's Pond - Sympathy or Friendship'?

How about '1896 Prairie Locomotive Engine, Long Since Retired - Birthday or Retirement'?

Who cares what the title is? OR if it follows the RULES

But how can you make a long title when its only supposed to be one or two words???

I got a post card of the planet earth the other day from a friend of mine. It read "wish you were here".

Take a picture for one of those "blank inside" greeting cards. Your title should refer to the section the card would appear in the store, i.e. Birthday, Anniversary, Friendship, Sympathy, etc.

See the bold word.....does it say must?

Why do we always have to start an argument when a new challenge appears. IMO this is the kinda stuff that is pushing many away from this site. We all just need to go out and take photos and learn from one another. I find it pointless to piss away time arguing over a stupid title.

Actually should was only bolded by you, not the actually details. It says "should" because there are no words inside the card and they wat the photo to convey what the message is rather then the title. If you actually go to a store you will see 2 different sections (or at least I did when I was there last night). Seems like your in a rather bad mood today. Maybe it would better to just ignore threads like this if there getting you upset.

I obviously bolded it for the purpose of this thread. I am not in a bad mood it just seems this kind of argument pops up everytime there is a new challenge. This website is about taking photos and learning from one another. As it is going here lately everyone is arguing over petty bullshit and DPC has lost a few good photographers that had contributed a great deal to this website. If it keeps going like it is then I will leave as well.

I'm not aware of anybody but chit that has left, and all I was trying to do is understand your PoV. As it stand IMO yes the title should be one (or 2) word or it will simple not do as well. Again why not just ignore threads that you don't want to read or participate in???

I was wondering if I could get some different hair on my little icon?
His hair doesn't reflect mine at all, there's simply way too much there.
Also, I don't think I own a shirt of that color.
If it doesn't change soon I'm packing up my lens cap and I'm going home.

My POV is that rules are made to be broken but nowhere does it say that your title MUST be one of two words.

The only problem I think is that the majority of "Blank Inside" cards are meant to serve a multitude of purposes...so it might be hard to title them if they dont fit a specific genre of card, its gonna be a bit boring if there are 100 entrys with "just because" as the title!

But have you gone into a store to see what this challenge is refering to??? All the catagories are one or two words such as birthday, mother's day/father day, with deepest sympathy etc. Thats why the title should be only one or 2 words. This was my purpose of going last night so I could see exactly what they were refering to since the site was very slow last night. Can you give me an example of what you were thinking it meant so I could maybe see your PoV???

But I believe this may be the point. Let the photograph speak instead of the words in the title to make the photo FIT the challenge.

An example of this was my entry for the conflict challenge. As it stands alone is only an egg BUT with the title its one of the oldest questions around.

Taking photos and learning is one thing. Post to the individual photograph forum if you want general feedback. Ask questions if you want to learn (various forums). The challenges are just that - a challenge - a competition with rules. Before you jump at that last statement, yes I know people try to learn from the challenges as well. That's fine, but it's kind of learning by fire. People should learn to read the rules (challenge descriptions) as well.

I think this was batted around substantially for the 'Time Capsule' challenge where MANY of the entrants felt they had to describe their entry via a lengthy title instead of playing by the rules, using a year for the title, and let the image stand by itself.

Here is the challenge description for 'Time Capsule'. Go look at the challenge history to see how many did/did not abide by the challenge description.

Your title should be the year that you are trying to capture for future generations.

As for this argument going on for every challenge that is a bit of a stretch. I started this thread knowing that at some point, whether I started it or not, there was going to be discussion about the titles for this challenge. Many complained the last time it came up that it was impacting votes because it was being discussed WHILE voting was going on. Why don't we talk about it now, BEFORE people even submit their entries. Then if they decide to take a risk and get descriptive in the title they are taking a risk with their eyes wide open.

As for leaving, well I've heard that before. Would be sorry to see it happen as I enjoy seeing your various positions taken on some fun issues. ;^)

If it said just "greeting card" and not "blank inside" I'd be more inclined to agree, as a connoisseur on greeting cards ;)

Its all a conspiracy!

I suppose it is a bit petty, however, it does seem that quite a few people would really like to earn one...why not keep it fair for all and play by the rules?
