I just finished voting on Perspectives. It's the first challenge I've submitted to and voted on. On some of the photo's it said "this image has been validated".

I assume that it means that those photos have had the originals submitted for rules scrutiny.

My question is, were those pic's selected based upon being top scorers and/or being challenged by a voter?

It would seem to me that either way, that info should be withheld during voting. Voting should be based solely on the image presented.

It means someone requested a DQ, I see no problem with this. It prevents people from voting down images they see as illegal.

it means that someone has requested a DQ on it and the person submitted proof on time and the photo fits all the challenge criteria. editing, date, etc.

you're both right, partially.

For a picture to receive a validation, the photographer has to request one, submit the originals, and usually, we look to see if it has had any dq requests.

If it has not had any dq requests, typically, we will examine it or validate it, but it does not get the "red" message.

But then what is the purpose for posting the "validated" message for the voters?

Some people might think an image is not valid and thus vote low on it. Like zarniwoop said, by posting that it had been validated the voter knows that even if he/she suspect some reson for dq, it has already been looked at and he/she can vote based purely on what they see.

But -- the voting rules specifically ask that you always vote as if the photo is valid -- if you think it's "wrong" you can request a DQ, but vot it as if it is perfectly legal, please.

The validation note should not really mean anything, except to reassure you that you don't have to make the request -- someone already has.

However, it really does. I've only ever had one picture requested for DQ (Darkeness challenge).

I was sinking slowly in the 4's and couldn't figure out why (it seemed to warrent a 5.0 or so to me) - then, I got a DQ request. As soon as the "validated entry" appeared on my entry, I bounced to my highest ever till then score (5.5). To me it implies that unusual entries may require a validation notice to receive a fair score.

I realize that that's not the way it's supposed to be, but until a validation request appears it seems that users don't really vote as though they believe the image is valid. That's the main reason that, when I request validation during a challenge, I think I'm doing the photographer a favor.

Based on what I am learning today, I think the fairest way is to show the voter nothing but the image and title.

However, it really does ...

I know, that's why I take every available opportunity to remind people of this guideline.
