in order to improve my photography (as well as my dpc scoring), please help by answering the following questions about the above photo:

1. did you think it was an actual tree branch?
2. did you realize it was a macro shot of moss?
3. did the title distract or mislead you?
4. would you like the photo better had it been cropped tighter?
5. any other comments?

looking back, i think it could would have benefited from an EV boost, but oh well...

thanks,
shane

--No, it looked like moss. But then, I am very familiar with moss macros :)

2. did you realize it was a macro shot of moss?

--Yes.

3. did the title distract or mislead you?

--No.

4. would you like the photo better had it been cropped tighter?

--No.

5. any other comments?

--For best scores, always, and I mean ALWAYS, enter a shot where the voter does not have think for one single second on whether or not your image fits the challenge. If you do, it almost guarantees you a low score.

I would put good macros into two categories:

1) A shot where the object is obvious and the interest lies in studying the detail. (Man, I've never seen a dragonfly that close before. That's cool.)

2) A shot where the object is not obvious, but the picture is interesting as an abstract (either patterns, lines, colors, etc.)

This shot doesn't fit the first (as people appeared to be confused about what it was) and only sorta fits the second. It's neat from the fractal idea that something small looks a lot like something big (at first glance i would have guessed it was a detail of a pine tree), but perhaps not neat enough.

I also agree with you that the lighting is difficult. The picture isn't very vibrant. Lighting is always an issue with macros and perhaps you were limited by equipment. I would have bumped up the lighting and color if possible.

1. did you think it was an actual tree branch?

No

2. did you realize it was a macro shot of moss?

Yes

3. did the title distract or mislead you?

No

4. would you like the photo better had it been cropped tighter?

No

5. any other comments?

It finished right where it should have. It's not a very compelling or interesting photo, except inasmuch as it's intellectually interesting, in the sense that Dr. Achoo points out. There's no focal point to it, nothing special about the lighting, it's just kind of "there", neither good nor bad, ya know?

5. any other comments? - The photo was well enough executed, but to me, the subject was weak and didn't hold my interest. I don't recall voting on this but would have given it a 5 +/-.
