No hurricane. But this story:

boat sinks in the atlantic

These people are all friends of mine from Eastport, Newfoundland and Melking and I both grew up with them all. Three brothers and another relative (among others) were on the boat and are the brothers of our friend Trudy who is living in Edmonton but headed home today after teh horrible news. One of her brothers, Justin, is still missing. It's just heart breaking and any prayers people could offer up would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. like the story says, one body was recovered and the rumor so far is that it's Trudy's little brother, Justin. He's just a young pup.

The longliner had apparently sailed out of Catalina, N.L., on Trinity Bay, and was fishing for turbot or shrimp.

I don't get it. Was it a longliner or a trawler?

Longliners do it all. In Alabama it may be different, but in NL it's all the same. A moot point none the less.

Lori, very sorry about this. I saw it on the news this morning, and I was thinking how terrible it must be for the relatives. My thoughts are with you and your friends.

That's awful. As a former fisherman and a lifelong waterman, my sympathy is extreme. I'm sorry for your loss.

It is. Trawlers catch shrimp and longliners catch big fish. Moot point I know. Kind of a hazardous work any way you look at is. It isn’t supposed to be as bad in the North Atlantic this time of year. At least not as bad as it gets. Down here late summer is definitely the roughest part of the year. Hope they find the rest of them.

My family is from The Rock, and sailed from Fermeuse since 1698. My cousins still shrimp every summer. It is a dangerous business. Our prayers are with you and the families.

Thanks everyone. It's been a hard day all around. If this were a week ago I'd be home to at least go see her..not that she probably wants to see a lot of people.

No new news yet...something in the morning probably.

P.S. to my knowledge, two of the guys missing were just boys - 17 years old. And Justin was in his early 20's. I"m not sure the other missing person is.

My prayers go out to you and the families of these poor souls. I have nothing but admiration for those brave folks that cast off to sea and have to deal with the harsh elements.

Hey Mel,

Just got an email from Nev who is heading home I believe. He said the body wasn't Justin, but the coast guard reported none of the guys missing were wearing survival suits or life jackets. Which, I don't have to tell you, is grim news in itself.

Trudy got home last night, I can't imagine what she's going through.

I also found out from Tonya that the other two guys missing weren't 17...Ivan is somewhere in his 30's and I'm not sure who the other guy is.

Keep me posted Mel.

Oh yea, Bernard (from Burnside) was one of the guy's rescued. I just can't believe it...I used to sit on the bus with him when he was a youngster. Good to hear he made it out.

If Nev is going home it's because of the accident. He grew up very close to Trudy and everyone else.

No more news today.

They have now called off the Search...and did not find anyone else!

Still cannot Believe it!

Everyone's in shock. Just can't believe it..

More accurate info than originally posted:

Sean and Justin were the only two brothers aboard, I originally thought their other brother Don was there, too but he wasn't. Sean was rescued, Justin didn't make it out. A total of 4 were rescued, 3 are missing, and 1 body found but not yet publically identified. Trudy's boyfriend confirmed it's not Justin, tho.

I hope one day the families can get some sort of closure.
