Just curious, how many people are tending to stay at home more now because of the gas prices? I remember when I would want to go catch a sunset or something, and I'd head to this little place about 40 miles from here to just go relax and watch the sun go down...and now, it's like I just can't justify using the gas to do it.
Maybe it's a good thing, as far as 'conserving resources' goes, but I feel it's really going to put a damper on my release of built-up anxiety and my stress-relieving 'rituals.'

conserving isn't the righ word... its not like there is a lack of oil out there, we just aren't getting it at the price we are used to. The oil didn't magically disappear... actually my cousins are fighting overseas right now and sadly enough in many of their pictures there are always bright enough light to have great pics - even at night. Becuase the country can't sell the oil fast enough and burns it away every night in blistering bon fires. Arg.... And I am paying 3.49 a gallon.
Meanwhile, i am riding my bike more and saving my poor car by taking the bus.... a change in lifestyle better for the environment. But yes, I too am waivering decisions of "go out and catch some great pics" or "stay at home because I can't afford to step foot outside my door". Grrrrrrrr

Yeah, up until no I havent really been coserving but I will now. I really cant affor 4.00 a gallon. Looks like we are going to have to make the best of this, less polution, more exersice, more time with the family. More time on DpChallenge.

in some places there is a lack of gas. here in NC they were talking about the possibility of a 4 day school week for a while because the supply is so low. i do deliveries to gas stations in NC and i'd say 1 out of 4 are already out of gas and don't know when they are getting more.
it could turn out to be nothing, but then again it could get bad.
either way, there isn't really anything to complain about when you're high and dry. |

I know it's not easy to go out without a car and get good pictures, especially if you live in the suburbs or somewhere else that's neither attractive nor inspiring. But about that sunset, deapee: do you really have to drive 40 miles to see a nice one? Isn't there a spot closer to your home that you just haven't discovered yet, that might be just as nice?
I walked and cycled hundreds of miles in NYC while I lived there for two years and while we were on our 7-month roadtrip of the American West, we brought our bikes, too, hiked a lot and really only needed the car when we had to cover longer distances.
Just some food for thought.
And yes, exercise, less polution, more fresh air that'll actually be fresher, too... It's all for the better, even if it is harsh for you guys right now.
The gas prices you have now are world market prices, no longer Bush&buddies subsidized, bribe the Arabs special US prices. We've paid what you're paying now for decades and even our prices are currently rising, but so far by a mere 5-10%.
And, regarding photography, I think it's a challenge, too. Try new stuff, set up a make-shift studio, start taking pictures of your kids, pets, wives, flowers, cactee etc.
Don't stop having fun and don't bum around in front of TV or PC all day and you'll be fine - I had my own personal "gas crisis" for the whole of last year, was unemployed and clinically depressed, without being diagnosed... It's a miracle I didn't kill myself, considering how often I thought about it.
All the best to you all,

heh...You're not too familiar with Pittsburgh, are you?
So yeah, if I want to see the sunset and sit in peace, it's about 40 miles. Of course, I can see the sunset from anywhere, but the hills littered with cars, houses, people, buildings, and all that fun stuff make it rather distracting. I know, it puts a new perspective on things, and I've seen it a million times...I just miss my little spot.

using this thread to save starting another Fuel price thread -
In the UK we are now upto and over £1.00 a litre or £4.55 a gallon.
there are many truck drivers who WILL be blockaiding ports etc starting wednesday 14th Sept in an attempt to bring fuel prices down.
Many garages are running out and not getting refills.
Many truckers will be doing a go-slow driving below 10mph on major motorways.

I do think about staying home abd waiting until I have a bunch of things to do rather than one. Like doing a full load of dishes instead of just a couple.
When I bought my tahoe it was around jan 2004. There were like three in our family. I had bought more fuel efficient cars when I worked alot and had to drive and hour each way to the ranch each day. But the cars just really took a beating on country roads. So I bought a tahoe and didn't end up going back to work . So now I have a gas guzzler, but I don't drive as often, just in town. Here is the problem, we live in a fairly small, but booming town & everyting is spread out. And there is no reliable public transport. Riding a bike is not possible. How would I get my groceries home from the only one very overpriced grocery store. There are no clothes or shoe stores or walmarts or targets ... I always have to go to the next town like 15 miuntes away.
But things are coming in the next couple of years. So do I keep the gas guzzler and do as I am doing now & paying 75.00 (3.15 a gallon)to fuel up every time or when it hits 4.00 trade in my beauty and by something more fuel effecient??? By the way I have a great dane and will be living further out in the country soon. Please no one get all environmental on me .. I come from a line of family farmers and we feed you with those tractors and trucks that also guzzle gas.

I'm moving in the next two months to the town where I've worked (and commuted 64 miles round trip every day) for the past 10 years. I'm hoping it will create some significant savings for me and for the environment.

I wish that was possible for my husband and i to move closer to where he works .. but when you work for the railroad... you are where the tracks need to be maintained and that is never in the same place for long. So I stay where my family is. I have tried to live in more rural areas and I am just not happy anywhere else. Even by the ocean I was still missing my valley rat life. |

I'm glad I traded my Expedition in months ago!!! I haven't cancelled any trips yet, but I drive a little slower to get an extra mile per gallon now.
