All guys

I'm looking at having a soft cover photo book done with perfect binding.

I did a test run with lulu.com and, even though the paper quality was good, the image quality was total crap.

Any suggestions for online print-on-demand?

Thx!

i'll second 'my publisher'. i'm putting together some books now that i intend to print through them. i was turned onto them by mavrik who has used them for wedding books. i believe their prices are inline with what you're after.

Ya the price is right but the cover design sucks and you can't do your own formating. :-( You gotta use their software and the options are very limited.

actually, you can do all your own layouts in ps and/or something like fotofusion and then publish a single 'image' per page. yes, it's a little more work, but it gives you complete control over each page's appearance. i would do this regardless of who did the printing. can't really help you with the sucky covers part, though ;-)

Why should you be paying the publisher?

as there are no publisher's willing to pay me (yet) for the rights to mass produce either my images from the 'frank-sharpe wedding' or my portfolio, i must pay them to produce it for me (since i prefer a hardbound, glossy-paged book to a standard photo album or portfolio).

;-)

This may not be what you want but why not go and chat to some local printers? A friend of ours (UK so no help to you unless you want to try doing it completely over the net), is a master printer but works entirely from computer to set up the printing and does binding etc.

Might be a cheaper option than going through a proper publisher and you would have control.

only an idea!

I liked the quality and ease of //www.snapfish.com. You may have to be a member before you can see some of the options but here is the pricing for the memorybooks:
MEMORYBOOK PRICES

Classic (Linen), Matte & Pattern:
First 20 pages $ 19.79
Each add'l 2 pages $ 1.99

Leather (Genuine):
First 20 pages $ 24.79
Each add'l 2 pages $ 1.99

BONUS: 25% discount on additional copies of the same book

Once you have images in your online album you drag and drop them into the pages. You have about 10 page designs to choose from and can select a different layout for each page. From one pic taking the entire page to 3 different size images per page and different positions.

I ordered one years ago as a memory for my parents when they stopped running a farm musuem in North Dakota. They used glossy, pamplet type paper. I was surprised by the quality of it and they totally loved it.

Good luck
