Thanks to all who commented and voted on my D&L challenge entry, my first true astrophoto entry in a challenge:

Most of the comments regarding my D&L challenge shot commented on the foreground trees being blurry. This is an unavoidable function of a piggyback astrophoto, as illustrated at this link. A larger format version of my challenge entry can be seen here.

I won't be using an astro shot in a challenge again anytime soon. I think it's too much of a risk for a general-interest photography site!

I commented your pic with the following:

Perhaps a crop out of the foreground would've helped.

This was an amazing shot, really. But that foreground did distract from the beauty of your astro subject.

It was an amazing shot. Lovely but that foreground did pull you away from the beauty of your intended subject.

Those shots just blow me away.

I want to get a EQ mount for my scope and naturally mount my camera to my scope as well.

use an astro shot. but just pay attention to foreground. i would have cloned out that white thing. or just cropped out everything but the tops of those trees. great shot though. actually, i think this shot would be cool if it was vertical. like maybe crop out the sides where there aren't many stars. vertical would emphasize "expanse" into the viewer, as they look up and up i think.

It`s a great shot, but i think it would be a shame not to submit such pictures just because there`s a risk of them not scoring to highly.

Agreed. Hell, I submit pictures allt he time that I know won't score well, just 'cuz I'm having fun making them...

The balance of the desire to experiment and learn against scoring high is something that will vary from person to person.

Sadly I am not good enough that my experimental shots score well, but that does not stop me from trying out new things. I have learnt a lot from a few low scores!!

Thanks for the comments to this thread. Ironically, I worked very HARD to get the foreground in the shot, believing that some foreground for context would enhance the shot. Because of the location of the observatory, I was limited in my choice of foreground objects to the dome of the observatory.

Regarding the orientation of the pic to portrait instead of landscape, take a look at this shot by Kirbic from the same location a few nights after my challenge shot:

Nice eh? Lot's of sky there. Of course, having a 15mm Canon helps a lot too.

Regarding the experimentation factor, this type of photography is not experimental for me, but using it in a challenge on this site definitely is. Many people are "wowed" by astrophotos, but many more are not, or are confused by what they see. I may use another shot in another challenge someday, but I'll think MUCH more about composition than I did this time (a very good lesson, regardless of the subject of my shot!!).

I like your astrophotos, strangeghost, as I have mentioned in the past. Had I voted on the challenge it would have been an 8...why? Cos it is different, original and well executed.

I know what is involved in Astro work as my neighbour and I do quite a bit - well he does it - I watch and shout excitedly when instructed. His SBig camera should be here this week, I'll get him to post some once he has worked it all out.

Keep posting your astro work...although everyone will know your shot in a challenge :))
