yes a newb question.
can you directly respond to comments on challenge entries to ask for clarification or specifics or to say something else about anything?
like: for the shoes challenge i am told things that i want to say to disput my pov or dof or whatnot "hey its a clothesline thats right at eye level so it wasn't difficult to take the shot" etc
or do i have to go to the people who made the comments and send them an email asking for what they think specifically should be done to improve quality or perspective etc?
some comments are fairly specific on how to improve, but some i would like to clarify
so i am just wondering
and yes .. too drunk to use punctuation, capitalization, or grammar (ha .. try spelling those words when you've had one too many)

Your question is not very easy to answer. The best advise is to wait until the finish of the challenge. By this time you may have received similar comments which will cement together. By the same token, you may get a series of comment which are in contrast to one that may have appeared negative and suddenly the one that bothered you is buried.
Some folks are so affraid of Pm's that they hide themselves when voting. There is some phobia with some. Personally, I feel the object is to learn and to maintain a civil dialogue but objectives here vary. Those who oppose being pm-ed have taken it to the next level by creating a rule change to allow them to vote in the invisible mode. Take it from here.

I personally do not like being PM'd during a challenge. I think it best towait until the challenge has finnished to reply. When people contact me before the end of the challenge it seems like they want me to re-evaluate thier image or reconsider the vote I gave them. If the image needs to be re-evaluated then the initial impact was not strong enough to begin with and the message they were wanting to convey with that image was vague or did not transcend.

There is certainly no rule against responding to a comment during a challenge. That said, many folks do not like getting resposes during a challenge. You shoud consider that your response will break the anonymity, at least for that voter.
Your submission should stand on its own, it should not need to be defended by responses to comments. Take the high road, don't engage in defense of your entry durig the challegne. My advice is to discuss it after voting has ended.

not really looking to defend it or contradict anything the commenters said
just looking to get a better understanding of what they meant so i can use that for the next time.

I have placed the answer to this on my profile page, since this is a personal preference issue. There are some others that have also done this and this is a simple way to resolve this question.

I am always happy to respond to questions at anytime.

Absolutely respond! But wait until the challenge is over! Notice the paper bag people? Each one of them has been annoyed by too many PMs during challenges. Please wait.

As one of the paper bag guy I don't find it annoying. It is just that as I vote I sometime revise what I did - usually when I have voted on all the images and am reviewing my votes. When I do that I prefer not to have had someone send me more info on their image based on my comments. And I prefer not to know who's image it was

well twla - if it happened to be me who made the comment reply away :D

I'm of the opinion that if you dont want PM's during the challenge you should be using the option offered by the site to prevent this happening - the bag head. Not the baghead is the default setting, so people that have removed the page IMHO are saying that they don't mind getting PMs while voting is on.
And if they do mind, then they should have put the bag on before commenting.

That's not the way it works.

PM me during the challenge, and if the language in the PM warrants it, I will go back and re-evaluate the entry. Only I would expect if I have to do that I will look at the image much closer and with a much more critical eye.

I was one of those bag people for a while because I am one of the few who have the balls to comment on the entries I score below 5. It seems a few responded with less then polite PMs. But I'm not walking around with a bag on my head, I'm of the opinion that if someone is that thinned skinned that they cannot take constructive criticism they should keep their images at home and show them to their mom on occasion. That way they can produce images of any caliber they care to and never a critical word.

you seem to be agreeing with me though nsbca.
I crit without a bag. I dont say anything nasty, but if there image is out of focus or they used the wrong white balance i will say so.
I had a person tell me that an honest critique makes them not want to shoot again - and its my opinion that if they are not prepared to learn from thier mistakes, maybe they shouldnt shoot again until they are ready to learn. No one wants to look at photos from people that refuse to make progress either.

If someone uses innaproriate language or saying how dare i point out an error they made, i'm not going back to thier image. But i have gone back at the request of the photog and given further tips during a challenge. And sometimes i even learn something from a PM during voting (wow!)

Okay heres an clean cut answer.

If they arent wearing a bag, you can reply because you know who they are (weather you should or not is up to your own personal taste).
BUT if youre going to just rant and rave at the comment - don't reply even.
If there commetn really warrents a ranting PM, tell SC instead.
