I just purchased a couple of paintings on what appears to be a rustic/rugged cut, curved shape wood. The sizes are about 14" wide X 22" tall. Very old paintings. They both are portraits (head only). The artist signed each as "FRENESI". They look to me as European style...from the clothing/hat....something like you would see a "Friar" wearing in an old Robin Hood movie or something.... My question is this... Has anyone ever heard of this artist or possible know more? Here is a link to a photo of the paintings... Please help if you can.

Thanks in advance!!!

I'm sure you'll get an opinion from someone more knowledgeable than myself. The wood and painting style seems reminiscent of the 1950s or early 1960s.
They appear to be done by a trained artist with the intention of mimicking the Renaissance style.
I'd be interested in hearing what the pros say.

I just checked my 1100-page Art History textbook for any mention of "Frenesi" in the index, and it's not there. Sorry, I don't know what to tell you. :(

The people I bought them from said they purchased them around 40 years ago...and could not even remember what they paid..but they also bought them at an estate sale...same as me. I got a suppppppper deal on them too...just hope I didn't waste my money. I like them anyway, so I guess it does not matter. Just wish I knew who this was and maybe an amount they might possibly be worth.

It's not a famous artist. My guess is they were done by a student or an amateur painter. They appear to be decorative.

Old art like that is really cool, and if you like them, your money was well spent. I'm always on the lookout for things like that. There are some real treasures out there.

The signature and rough style is too modern for old art. My guess is 1960's, 1970's/ They are definitely not pre 1950's.

Perhaps USD 50 for the B&W one and USD 75-100 for the color one, but I'd have to say that I'm not interested in either (just not my thing).

Wow..! I had no idea they might actually be worth much more than what I paid for them.

Have you considered that perhaps the signature means Friar Renesi (F Renesi)? I got some odd (yet perhaps poignant) results when searching for "renesi". Lots of references to religious representations, etc. Just a thought...

I'm not positive, but I think I recall seeing the face of the guy at the left on a matchbook cover with the caption, "Can You Draw Me?"

| Perhaps you should ask Lesley Goodman, she is a very famous painter/artist. |
