I suggested this in the other thread--but wanted to start a new one, so if it gets going, it could be dedicated to the project.

What about starting a very quick to finish project to produce a group photo "poster" to benefit Katrina victims? Sort of like Johns Picture Alphabet project. Something where proceeds benefit Katrina victims long term, and something made especially from them. Almost like a "card" from DPC.

I'm not sure what type of photos would be good though. Thought I'd just bring it up and see if anyone has some ideas for that, if the base idea is sound.

I don't know how exciting it would be, but what about a picture from each person's hometown showing what is being done to help the victims?

I'm thinking Photos that represent rebirth, renewal, growth???

Good ideas, both. Keep them coming!

Looking at John's alphabet poster you could almost try to come up with something conceptual for each letter

G = Growth
H = Helping
N = Neighbors
R = Rebirth

etc.

but of course, we won't be doing

L = Looting

;)

Uh, it took months to get those alphabet projects (barely) finished. I strongly suggest a project of more limited scope if you want an immediate contribution.

If you really want an alphabetic motif, you could use the the letters of the city of New Orleans, but to me that would seem to devalue the impact on the rest of the region too much. Most of the other themes I can think of right now also have possible negative connations ... sorry I can't be more helpful than that : (

But a few of you can divide up a 20 x 30 space however you want and each contribute an image on a shared background -- lots of ways to do that.

j = jazz.

kind of appropriate, i think.

Honestly, when I think of katrina I think of the fact that some of our countries best cultural get aways may be lost forever. Those who have never visited New Orleans and had the pleasure of watching a mime out in the french quarter after a good craw fish meal.... I hurt to think that town may never be the same. I wish we could capture memories and instillments of what those towns mean to us. Though the monuments are gone the memories linger forever and so shall the way we capture them....

J = Jazz is cool

and C could = Cajun!

We could mix some things like that in with the positive concepts Andy listed.

Ok, heeding Paul's words, to move quickly, we may take a more haphazard approach (not looking for "perfection" here). Anyone who wants to volunteer, if you have a picture in mind that fits a letter that fits into this developing theme, grab your letter by posting the term and thumbnail if you have it here.

If it looks like we can fill in the alphabet quickly, we're part way there. Then we just have to deal with poster production. We'll figure that one out if we can get past step 1. :)

We can make a final determination if it's a good idea once we what we would have to work with.

For a really spooky story, I just got back yesterday from visiting my mom in L.A. On Saturday we'd dropped off this roll of film she'd found in the back of one of her dresser drawers a couple of days before.

When I got home last night, she called and said she'd picked up the pictures, and that they were from her vacation about three years ago ... in New Orleans.

I think we could try to come up with messages that take up the city's initials (N.O.)

a few spontaneous ideas:

Neighbors Organize (help)
No One left behind (sound a bit cynical right now, watching the news...)
NO surrender
NO looting

Now, the challenge, fittingly for this site, would be to get those messages across in pictures...

Just thought I'd throw this out there, see what you Americans make of it. It's early morning here, getting late over there, so we'll just have to see where this goes.

All the best, especially to those with friends or family in harms way,

Bruno

How about a two collages of people's old photos, Your best Louisanna and Mississippi shots. Some of those sites are probably lost forever. Everyone doesn't have photos from there, but it may be too tough to put that many photos together anyway. If it came down to deciding which photos go on the posters, maybe DPC would let us do a speed vote to pick the ones to use. If the posters were done really nice with a great title to each, I bet they could be sold for donations to the people. That's what they really need the money for supplies.

All I could offer is NYC/WTC pre, during and post 9/11... Don't know if that's very helpful ;-(

This is a great idea, Neil! I think Pixieland probably has the best idea for how to implement this quickly. If you can put together a group of photos that people already have, you can finish a poster really soon. Maybe you can work on a few of these at a time to make the easy ones available quickly and the more time-consuming ones available later. Of course, I'd be glad to host the fininshed products in my SmugMug gallery and will donate all of the proceeds to this cause. Thank you! :-)

Yes, we could probably do it without going through the alphabet--probably a set of beautiful pictures of the towns and landmarks destroyed--not just N.O. And then some nice encouraging words about the future, in poster fashion.

I don't have any shots from the south--though I'm sure many people here do. I'm happy to facilitate, or do whatever I can. But it will be up to DPCers to volunteer some great shots.

If we don't have to go through the alphabet, that might in fact be quicker. So anyone willing to donate a shot, chime in here.

Anyone who is interested in pulling it togethr in PS, that's cool too. Or I'll do it if no one else wants to. I am willing to, but mainly, I was just suggesting this, so if you are interested, just speak up.

I don't have any phots from there myself, never been. My PS skills leave lots to be desired, just a beginner. Don't know what help I'd be other than the suggestions I had. Sorry.
