This is my first Challenge and the lack of comments is quite disappointing. I have no allusions about ribboning on the first try but have been craving feedback to drive the learning. With 139 votes cast on my submission but only 4 comments this is going to take a while:)
There can only be two reasons
a) My submission is not powerful enough, is received apathetically and therefore gets an apathetic response
b) Everyone voting has to vote on at least 91 submissions (20%). The task is daunting and so there is no time to comment, just vote.
I suspect that there is a mixture of both reasons. The prospect of the reasons being a) is horrid since what drives many of us is making an impact.
Is this something that we're all finding? |

Hey there Brett, welcome to dpc :))
With this challenge, 465 enties, unless your image is in the top, or bottom 10% (outstanding or glaringly bad) you probably won't get a lot of comments. There are just so many entries to go through with the voting people don't have the time to make as many comments. You may well still get more.......oftentimes people go back and comment later when they have a bit more time.
Best thing if you want more feedback on your image is, after the challenge is over, to post it into the forum (challenge entries or individual photograph discussion and ask for comments/critique.
In the meantime you could dive on in and vote/comment on the other entries, and you could post another pic (host it on another photo site and link to it) that you'd like some comments on.
Good to see you here

Brett - Sue is completely right. I voted on all yesterday. Oh so many shoes~so little time. I'll spend the next couple of days editing the scores accordingly and leaving comments. It's the process that works best for me. I like to give a second and sometimes third look at the picture, before committing a score. Somedays are better than others and I am more likely to vote according to my attitude. And there are times I miss the message in the submitted image. A second look can never hurt. Therefore, because I don't committ to a score the first round...I also don't want to committ to a comment. I think you'll get more comments, but there are an awesome number of pictures to go through. Keep submitting and don't read too much into it. |

I have a 5.6 in the shoe challenge, and only 4 comments.
I expect I am probably sitting in the top 40 with this score. (pretty sure its a low average score challenge). Don't feel bad, its all attributed to sheer volume issues.
The comments should increase anytime now that people are finally almost done voting. If they waited to the last minute to vote, they probably won't have time to cast out many comments.
I will add a few more today when I get back from town. |

It is because there are soooo many entries. I have had to vote this way:
1st pass, give only either 4 or 5. 4's I will deal with later, 5's I will look at again, comment adjust and pick my winners.
Back to 4's to adjust and try to give helpful comments.
It takes a long time to just look at all of these entries just to catagorize them into contenders or not.

The ones I find hard to accept are comments from people that have absolutely no photo's in the portfolio or don't even own a camera. I also really don't understand the ones that say, does not meet the challenge when you can clearly see the item the challenge is about. Also it seems alot of the comments are from people that don't even read the challenge to see what it's about. So it would be nice to have a button just for those people LOL |

I said this to someone privately, but I'll say it here publically. I didn't enter "shoes" and probably won't get to vote (much less comment) on the challenge, but if anyone would like an honest and objective comment, PM me your photo id number (last part of the URL) and I'll leave you an objective comment. |

Thanks for your comments everyone, most helpful. I didn't appreciate that people went back and adjusted their votes and added comments later. That would explain why people were saying in the last day of Dairy "my scores just took a huge dive".
I guess I thought that everyone does what I do which is do both at the first pass. I've voted 120 times and commented on 98 of them and I agree it's a real time-taker. I don't think it's sustainable.
From reviewing previous challenges, I notice as you said that the good ones get lots of comments. I've operated on the inverse principle of trying to comment on those which don't quite come off and giving my reasons why it doesn't work for me

Could it just be a bad week for comments? Besides being the last week of summer for many in the US there was Katrina. Perhaps many feel as I do that with all the human tragedy, commenting isnt the priority it was a few weeks ago. |

I think its just the sheer volume of entries. Could be also like emorgan49 said, Hurricane Katrina. Thousands of people that lived in that area are now evacuated, stranded without power etc. Not to mention all the National Guardsmen, military police and Red Cross on their way to help. |
