From Yahoo news photo site, here are a couple of Katrina-related "looter" pictures. Interestingly enough, when the subject is an African American, it's "looting," but lighter-skinned folks "find."
Looting
Finding
Any thoughts?

| That's too funny (and true). I actually saw the first photo already somewhere else and it didn't mention looting just that he was bringing groceries home. "Finding from" isn't even proper english. I think this is just Yahoo's doing. Still ridiculous, but sadly I have come to expect it. |

Those white folks aren't the type to "find" anything either.
But what really annoys me is that in the mist of all this chaos, the media still found something that's really unimportant. I mean the stores are gonna perish! Might as well let them go and get what they want.

It's all about the illusion of control and order. And yeah, to some extent it's about the social contract, or in other words, the LAW. Logic often plays no or little role in this kinds of contexts.

Until given a reason to think otherwise, I'll assume the photographer (or someone with him) captioned the photos based on what was happening -- not just what is seen in the images.
But seriously, 'looting' or 'finding' -- take your pick -- just what is so mind blowingly news-worthy about people wading thru water? Can't these 'news hounds' find anything interesting to report on?

two different photographers...two different thoughts on what they were seeing.

Different photographers, different news agencies, different circumstances with no context to ascertain what is really going on in each photo other than the caption.
Yep, open and shut case for racism on the part of [insert hated political faction here]. |

Ok whatever, I think the whole looting thing is disgusting. If it's food and things you need, ok. It's prob one of the only ways to get it there right now. But televisions and radios are stealing. I don't care what race you are! And as far as the to comments. I wouldn't read much into it. That's me just the way life works. Trust me I live in both races(being mixed) and I know!

"Finding from" is from the AFP picture. AFP is Agence France-Presse. Their English isn't perfect, but its better than my French. :-) |

yet another reason why I HATE the mass media. Im amazed that we as humans have lasted this long. Im sure the earth is trying to rid its self of its worst parasite, humans, which one day it will.

AFP has an English-language service, actually, and I'm presuming that's the part of the company that's active in the US. There's no "excuse" for bad grammar.
