I tried to enter into the shoes challenge but could not for the life of me, get my shot down to 150K. (not without the photo being really small). It was highly detailed with colorful stripes behind it and hot pink in the front and I was wondering if it could have been because of this that put the file size up so much. I had rather small photo that was still 250K. Any tips on reducing file size without making the quality really low? |

What software are you using to compress your file?

In Photoshop > Save for Web > Optimize File > File Size 150K
There is a tutorial around here someplace. |

The more detail in an image (including noise) the less "compressible" it is. The file size will therefore be larger. You should not have to make the image smaller than 640px on the longest side to get it below 150k, however. As previously posted, if you're using PS, then save for web is the way to go. You can either set it to optimize for a particular file size, like 149k, or you can move the quality slider and watch the file size until it is under 150k.

It worked!!! thanks everyone! Also...I hadnt thought about noise adding to the size...but that would certainly make sense. |

before saving, resize your image to the desired size (max. 640 pixels) then go to file - save for web. Make sure the "optimized" square is checked then just play with the "quality" slider until you get close to 150k. You'll see the file "weight" in the bottom left corner.
Darnit... just too late.... ;-)
