I miss the thumbnails of the photographer's four highest scoring photos when I visit their profile page.

I meant to start the same thread. I too miss the thumbnails under the profile. This way, I'd click on the name in a forum, then say "hey, he/she's the one that took that shot". I'd really like to see it reinstated.

How about the submission thumbnails on the home page? There just don't seem to be many pics on the home page for it to be a photography site. It seems so grey now. Showing thumbs of my current and next submission would help.

I have to say you bring up an interesting point, indigo. The home page looks nothing like a photographers' site. It is, as you say, grey and filled with text, and does not compare, visually, at all favourably with the other dpc nor with photoblink nor even BestFoto.

(Just to be clear, I am certainly NOT unfavourably comparing the site as a whole with those other places, just the home page.)

I would be interested in the design decision process if you'd care to share your thoughts, drew and langdon.

The home page will look more "decorative" when the winners from both of the week's challenges are posted -- and even more so if they post the winner of a 48-hr challenge too. On my screen, just those six thumbnails will push the forums and about everything else right off the bottom. The neutral gray background was a specific request from many users (including myself), because that provides the most accurate viewing environment possible.

I think the design for a regular user's "home" page, where they return innumerable times while navigating a session, needs to be different and more functional than the Site's Home page, where visitors would hit if they just surfed to the site's URL -- THAT needs to be full of interesting stuff, not a list of rants by the membership.

Maybe we could have a preference to toggle thumbnail display on our personal home page. I like to look at the pictures for a couple of days, but after that I have more need to quickly navigate the forums. I don't know if I need to see the thumbnail of my submission(s) there, but there should be a link.

In 2 weeks there will be twice as many thumbs on the home page since we will be running 2 concurrent challenges (minimum I believe) each week. When we do some 24/48 hour challenges, there will be even more.

I think we can work in your own submissions on the home page right above the View Details/Submit and Cast Your Votes links.

You know you've made a decent point when you come up w/ the ~same answer as someone else.

I wholeheartedly agree. The new design is very friendly to existing users, but is pretty clinical to people who are not familiar with DPC. Perhaps featuring more of our work (even in thumbnail form) for users who are not logged in would be more effective?? The burst of color, I'm sure, would be a welcome addition.

I also want to say that it probably doesn't help that, coincidentally, the top two pictures this week are a duotone and a B/W shot. Some of the other challenges will provide much more colorful shots (think "It's a Frog Eat Frog World").

I know when I designed the site, I wanted it to be as expandable as possible... and to be all about the photographs. I'm completely sure that the first time I thought of how to lay all of this information out, I had in mind an idea similar to this one. Let me throw out my revised version of this idea, and you guys can comment on it or make it better...

2 new 'home page' preferences....

- Rows of recently commented images to show

- Rows of recently added favorites to show

Your options would be 0,1,2,3. Default would be two of each. That way, for logged out users, they'd see all of the challenge winners, plus two rows of recently commented-on images and two rows of recently added favorites. Users (you) could decide if those default preferences were OK for you, or if you wanted more or less (or none) of either.

What do you think? Do you think my two types of photographs (favorites and commented-on) are good selections? (I'm not sure what others to pick if not). Gimme some feedback :)

Yeah, but I'm SO used to typing slow and seeing mine posted right after someone else's!

Drew --

I like the general idea very much. I still think registered users should also be able to toggle the winning photos (just have the row choices 0 or 1/default=1).

What about if the two photo "zones" you propose had pop-up lists for content? For example, I might like to display a row of recently commented-on photos and one of random selections from the Humorous Gallery.

I like having the "Public" home page displaying the categories you mention...I think they would represent "high-quality" and "active" aspects of the site you probably want to emphasize. Just make sure you have a "shill" assigned to comment on a good photo every hour or two so those photos on the public page don't languish all week...

- Hey Langdone, great job on reacting to this post. Good job on the thumbnails guys.
- This site is really starting to grow on me. I was so used to the old format that I wasn't crazy about the layout at first. Now I spend more time here because of the added content. Thanks. The best $25 ($39.50 Canadian) I've spent this year.
- By the way, I love the preview button for the posts.

I'm *really* missing the submission pics on the front page.

This week, seeing the thumb of my photo next to my poor score cheered me up immediately : )
Now the balance in the force has been disrupted!

There is also no indication at all on the front page that I have submitted to the motion challenge.

On the whole (now I've had time to look around properly) the site is a huge improvement - congratulations on a job well done.

I really like the idea (if I'm visualizing it right), especially the 'pick your option' part... The more choices the user has the happier everyone can be.

One small nit that I believe you have covered but I want to be sure it's picked :) There should be a link from near the thumbs for the winners of a challenge, to the entire challenge... I know I can get to it through the menus, but it isn't as intuitive as you might think.

Again, great job!

I like that the thumbs are back...but I think there's just too many of them now...Heck, I think it got every single one of my photos in there

Preemptive Worry :

I was just looking at the profile thumbs that have returned and thought came to me. Are the 'Highest Ranking' thumbs going to be for Open challenges, member challenges, or mixed? If non-members can't vote in member challenges, than the scores won't really be comparable. I think you''ll need 2 rows maybe? Just curious...

Sweet, thank you.

I'm not sure you'll get enough 'traffic' on the recently commented list, assuming that comments in the current challenge don't count. Post voting challenges only tend to appear on the top few photos.
The critique club would be a big help here though so I guess it could work (and hey, it gives me a chance of getting on the front page!).

Recently added favourites is a great idea, and could result in some amusing combinations - someone adds all of a certain photographer's entries to their favourites, or many people see a photo on the front page, and they all add the same one!

Yeah, I like the idea.
Paul

Oh, another option would be 'most recently viewed' (in the galleries) assuming that you could discount views by the actual photographer.
