So how are you doing on DPC? Are you getting better? Scores aren't always indicative of the quality of a picture but they can be an indicator of the increasing or decreasing appeal of your photos. I have noticed that my scores have been increasing over time. I hope that means I am becoming a better photographer.

Post your average score for your last 10 challenges on DPC and your overall average. Are you improving?

Last 10 challenges 6.1786
Overall Average 5.527

I joined and jumped in with both feet. I have only entered 4 challenges, and have bombed in the last three (currently have an entry in D&L), but the threads and the advice have been amazing. The structure of my shots have improved and my post editting have improved two-fold. The difference before and after joining DPC has been monumental. The biggest impact a single person has had on me in this forum, was a thread I read (I wasn't in the conversation, but was enthralled with the back anf forth of the rant)..someone chimmed in to stop complaining about scores and if they wanted to be a better photographer grab their camera and go out and take some pictures. I took it to heart and have done exactly that...and for me it has worked.

My improvement isn't as dramatic as I expected.

last 10 - 6.32

10 before that 6.03

But my first few challenges only averaged like 5.6....

For each of my entries (only 4 so far) I was getting better and better scores until the last one! But, that doesn't faze me much because what I am learning from other photographers here is priceless. It is encouraging me to get out and try something different!

you want me to do math this early in the morning? Lets just say I am not improving.

My scores keep getting worse. To the stage where I am starting to get really dissolutioned. I believe my photos are getting better but I am still getting slammed on the scores. I have done nothing in the last month but read forums, follow along with mentorship threads, try out the ideas and study my camera and yet I still cannot get a 5 vote. I doubt that I will be submitting for challenges for a while because I put my heart into this one and I don't think I can take people voting it down and making comments such as "your title is too long". (It's a photographic competition people!) I think the main thing is that I know my knowledge has improved and I know a lot more about my camera, which will be sure to show in my photographs. My family also gets to fill up their photo albums which they love!

I'm stuck on a mini roller coaster ride.
But looking at my current 2 photos and the past rain challenge, I think I've run out of gas even for those little bumps...
Perhaps I should stick to animal photos :)

I am still learning though!

I think I've improved but my scores don't show it.

Stupid scores!!!

I'm happy with my photography skill, it hasn't improved much in the past couple years ... but my photoshop skill could use a complete overhaul.

... which would make my photography "appear" as though it were improving

:)

Overall my pics are getting higher scores. I still have the occasional bomb, but I have crawled out of the 5's into the 6's with the last few challenges. I was looking at my challenge photos and I'm not quite seeing what it takes to get 7s or ribbons. Not sure what my work is lacking, but atleast I've identified it. It takes time.

Unless your Joey or Nico! :)

+ 0.3582 A little over a 1/3 of a point. Not much improvement.

more and more of my images are keepers. I consider that an improvement.
less and less have to be edited for dumb pre-visualization mistakes. I consider that an improvement.

My scores aren't improving but that is due less to technical issues now and more due to taste issues.

I'm still looking for the mysterious "eye-candy" formula everyone talks about. Maybe I just don't know what eye candy is. Maybe that's why my scores aren't improving. ;)

Dahkota,

I found that the trick to 'eye-candy' is to format your pictures (and post-prod them) so that they could appear in a magazine, as an advertisement or something glamorous of sort. This helps me find the proper lines towards 'eye candy'ism.

Hope this help.

As for the original question, i am improving a lot, i learn so many new things every day!!

Funny that you ask....

To celebrate one year at DPC, I entered the Live Music challenge.
And guess what? One of my better shots over all, got the worst score in my DP history!

Yeah, you bet i'm improving! I am ten times ahead of where I was a year ago. But my scoring in the challenges do not show that. I honestly don't give a damn if my shot gets a 7 or a 3.
As a matter of fact, my score is dropping with each challenge I enter.

but I think my shots are so much better! I have stopped shooting for the mob. I am shooting for myself now. And I love it so much more!
I have a lot more confident when I pick that camera up. I get into my shot a lot more then I used before.
I am not trying to make life pretty. Life is not pretty.
The trick is to get those emotions and bits of life that are all around you, saved in a way that YOU want to present. Not looking for something pretty to shoot.
Accept that and you will learn to shoot.

Depends on the magazine. Some magazines have pictures that would never get a ribbon here and I'm talking about photo magazines :P

Yup. I have improved.

First 10: 4.6397
Last 10: 5.5933
Current Overall: 5.3234

But I think score can't possibly show the improvement in my understanding of post-processing, photography techniques, or ability to take a lower percentage of less-than acceptable photos.

My commenting has improved, I think.
My willingness to try new things and take risks has improved.

So, yes, I have found what I was looking for here.

Once again, I've killed a thread. :(
08/30/2005 02:13:15 PM · #24
Hey, I'm the thread-killer around here. Don't take away the only thing I do consistently well!!

08/30/2005 02:32:27 PM · #25
Well....
I have only been a member since July 19th. But here are my stats:
Challenge #1 4.019
Challenge #2 4.099
Challenge #3 3.976 :( - nobody could see my rain

Current D&L 5.6232

I am not happy with my scores, but am personally happy with the growth and the increase in my abilities to compose and edit shots. I love it here and welcome any feedback - I love comments even critical ones.
