How should we manage spreading our critiques across the member and non member challenges? I think that having two challenges on the site will increase the total number of photos each week, because I believe lots of members will participate in both challenges...

Thoughts?

I for one think that if we are being assigned pictures, they should be from the non-paying contest, as we may have critiquers that aren't members. Plus, I feel that we should be making it availble to all that post photo's and the easiest way would be doing the free contest.

I don't think there is anything wrong with doing the members contest, just have it on a volunteer basis, as I don't have time for both.

One way is to sign me up as a critiquer. I tried to send you an email and I got a message that it was not deliverable. I'll try again when I get home in a little while.

To spread the critiques across the challenges you could do it on a percentage basis. If there are 150 member entries and 250 non-member entries, that's 38% to 62%. If you are going to do 100 critiques, assign 38 random entries from the member challenge and 62 random entries from the non-member challenge. If you have 10 critiquers give each person 4 entries (38% rounded to 40%) from the member challenge and 6 entries from the non-member challenge. The numbers might change but the math is the same.

I'd like to retain the current plan of critiqueing the open challenge for the moment.

We've only JUST started on that task so adding another challenge a week seems a bit premature?

I haven't joined the members thing yet, though I do intend to, so it's not just that I am speaking from the point of view of someone who isn't going to be doing any of those member only challenges.

Lets assume that all people who pay to be a member are serious into photography. I think they are, but I don't think that non-payers are not, don't get me wrong.
That might also lead to 'better' comments in the member challenges. Lets see what happens first, sit out four of those challenges and keep concentrating on the free challenges with the CC.

When the member challenges really need better comments, the CC can jump in at any time. I don't get paid to do CC-comments (and I don't want to get anything), so I am in favour of concentrating on the free challenges and changing later to a max of 50/50 if necessary.

And I'd really like to comment on pics from people who specifically asked for an indepth comment. It is a waste of time to make a comment that isn't read anyway.

I've already got one email from someone who learned something from a CC-comment. Very encouraging, thanks.

I agree to keep the critiques with the open challenges for helping those that are new to photography. I've only been shooting since end of Aug and have learned some about DOF, aperatures, rule of thirds, etc. Before then I hadn't heard of any of that. I new some cameras could keep the shutter open longer, but I didn't know the difficulty and beauty in those shots. I've learned a lot from the tutorials and different photographers on the site. So we are impacting those new people and to get an in depth review and tips will help them.

I'm a critique club critiquer who's going to eventually be a member, but whose VISA card is currently scorched in a flaming pile of plastique. Maybe in January, when the finances are better...ha! For now I'll stick to the non-member challenge critiques.

I'm also a critique club critiquer who's going to eventually be a member, but Ihave to just sort out this exchange rate thing and my budget! +/- R9.20 to US$1 x $25 but I feel this site is worth it!
I think lets stick to the non member challenge for now

Sorry for the delays in response here... I have electricity again but no internet service yet... ice storms suck :)

We will stick with the open challenges for now...

Glad to see you back, at least in some form.
I agree with your conclusion, and most of the other posts. Sticking with the open for now will allow us to both get the CC going smoothly, and to judge the responses.
I would hope that if we are as successful as I think we will be, that a lot of other folks will sign up, and that will allow us to expand and cover both challenges. Then perhaps the software could be upgraded in ways discussed before to allow us to critique only those who ask for it.

The more i think about this, the more i want to spread critique into both challenges.... I don't think that members should be denied the opportunity to have critique. And since we are still in the beginning phases of this project, does it really matter which photos we work with?

I think that would be a good idea to critique the members in both and then everyone in the open one. This week I haven't had an idea for the motion challenge, but I'm headed out now to get some for the member challenge.
