Peacefully in her sleep, JoJo passed. Her sister, Miranda (pictured below) was at her side. Miranda buried JoJo with wood shavings until she could be removed from the cage. JoJo leaves behind her loving sister, Miranda, and her owner, Shelby (age 4). Burial will likely be today, in the back yard.

I'm really really sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace. How are the sister and the owner holding up?

Will Shelby be wearing black at the burial?

Life is short, especially for a rat. Here's to wishes that JoJo had a happy, fruitful existence. My thoughts are with Miranda & Shelby.

JoJo wasn't herself for a week or so, wasn't interested in yogurt treats, which they both love. I don't know if we should get another rat so Miranda doesn't get lonely. I'm worried they may just fight. A friend of mine has a lot of rat experience, so he'll have some advice for me.

Shelby & her older sister were sad when we told them, but moved on to other play pretty fast. The corpse is in the fridge in the basement, and the kids haven't seen it. I don't know whether an open casket would be better for closure or not. I suppose they'll both want to see, as they're pretty curious kids. Our cat has been on her last leg for about five years now, sheesh.

I doubt anybody will be wearing black, LOL.

I've always wanted a snake, but my wife says she'll move out if I get one.

we know your pain...
we recently lost two gerbils.
One died and then started getting eaten by her tank mates... i had to recover the body which wasnt fun...burial occured later that day.
the other escaped a week later and we literally lost him in the basement.

Now, there are 4 more...
anyone want them??

haha, i have one, a python, great pet, relatively no upkeep costs. just buy 3 mice a month, fill its water bowl and clean out its cage every so often. the snake is 27 years old too... lol.

Tell your wife that the snake can handle the burials for you, and bill it as a labor-saving device...

Sorry to hear about Jo-Jo; I hope she's gone to a place where the yoghurt treats never stop coming and the snakes & owls are vegans.

Hope your daughter is taking it ok. Loss of a pet can be hard on young children. Sorry for the loss.
