I am an amateur and have only submitted to 2 challenges. Please take everything I type here with a grain of salt....... I love the compositon and lighting, although I can see where it might be too light for some. The only 3 distractions for me personally are the dark shadow on the music, the lack of finish on the violin and, the graininess of the picture itself. I want to give it a 10 because it's you.....but, honestly I would probably rate it at 8-9 in a vote.

Ah, that explains it. Is there any filter you could have used while shooting through glass? BTW, I like the first version better than the second. The second one seems more "everyday", not as interesting as the first one. It also has banding in the top right.

I'm still having the same problem with the dark shadow on the music. The violin is better except for the glare that shows up across the top edge. Still would rate at 8.

Baroque........when you have no Monet.... :0)
ok...bad jokes aside...I think the first one is washed out..not enough contrast. And while I like the color better in the second (because it makes the wood grain "pop"), I'm still bothered by the light background and shadows/light on the left hand side. (I know you couldn't control that) or perhaps you could have blocked the light somehow? Anyway....it's not a bad pic, I don't think it needed the grainy effect (this coming from someone who did Fingers and Toes and got busted for it a bit.
It just doesn't stand out to me that much...although I think it's a good job since you had to shoot it through a glass case. K |

I like the first one better than the second, don''t like the glare on the edges. So if it ain''t Baroque---don''t fix it. :-p~~~~

I really like the first one (didn''t look at the second). It has a pencil sketch quality to it that really appeals to me. I don''t think you need to "fiddle" with it any more. (I gotta get some sleep tonight)
Also, if you like square pictures, I think cropping it just above the bridge (i think that''s the right term, I really was a music major) would make a nice composition. Of course then the music becomes the main subject.

Bridge, yes! That's the word I have been trying to come up with since my first post. Thanks, Karmat :)

Thanks to everyone for the critiques on this image... I took the original image I posted here and redid it without the grain and brightened it up just a bit... I left the shadows to the left of the violin body intact because I sorta liked that effect.
I made an 8x10 print of this image on the Office Depot house brand photo canvas paper... it looks really nice :) |

John, I'm at home viewing both pictures again. I previously made comments while viewing them from work. What a difference, From here, I clearly like the first one better. - on the other monitor, The first one was way to nuteral. Both monitors are calibrated, but there are substancial differences. |

Gotcha,
Thanks for the comments... I like the black and white better too and there are thousands of level adjustment combinations that work well with it. I wanted this piece to frame and put on the wall in my foyer. I printed it on photo canvas and got a nice frame for it.. I can't wait to hang it up :) |

So, has image 1 been adjusted from the time I left work? |

THIS is the image I ended up printing. I went to one of my other shots so I could get an 8x10 crop without losing the pieces I wanted to keep. |

I like that one (the one you printed) but i sort of like the original one you posted better. To me it looks like its been sketched.. I would have given it .. oh.. probably an 8 because as Lisa said the lighting is a bit bright. but I still like it. Neato job on all of them thought! :)

I need Lisa to come with me when I take photographs. I think she could help me out quite a bit :) |

How did you acquire a baroque violin? Or, to me what it looks like is a modern violin with a baroque bridge and gut strings (witch BTW look like the strings and the bridge are on backwards - or you inverted the photo 180 degrees)... Also the bow doesn''t look like a genuine baroque bow, and if it is, it would be more interesting (as a musician) to see the tip of the bow, witch would distinguish the time period better. As for technical aspects of the photo, the shadows on the violin and the music are very nice. The shadow to the left of the violin, however is a bit distracting, you might try with out the "silhouette" once and I think you will achieve the same over effect with the photo... 9

Ridiculous comment from setzler. What a nice surprise! :) Now, if you'd only join in one of those entirely ridiculous threads, I might be inclined to buy one of your prints :P I'm determined to bring you over to the 'dark side.'
For the record, your final adjustment is my favorite of the 3. I bet it looks just grand on your wall. |

Thanks :)
Saw this image in Deviant this morning. Looks better now its bigger. I like it in B&W, but would like to see it in colour so that i could see the texture of the wood. Nice image. I''m so glad this weeks challenge isn''t Music. The King is dead, Long live the King :-)
Just saw the other two attempts. Sorry, don''t like them. Prefer the first one, IMHO :-)

I think this is an example of where a photo title can screw someone up :) This is not even a real violin... It's a model... It's part of an art piece... |

I know this discussion is probably pretty dead by now, but I'll chime in anyway. The only thing that bothers me about this photo is the unnatural / photoshop feel of the grain. To me it just doesn't look right. Everything else is spot on, imo. Good shot, John. 8 with the grain, I didn't get a chance to catch your other modified links so I don't know if you changed it.

Mike, the version I printed had the grain removed because I printed it on Photo Canvas... HERE is the image I printed... |
