I used the wrong term in my last post. How do you decide whether to put a border on a pic or leave it alone?

I almost always put on a 10pixel border all the way around. Usually in white or black but sometimes another neutral color will work better. If it looks stupid with the border on I don't use it. I like some of the nice borders you see around here but i've got no idea how people do it.

Decide if it augments or accents the photo in any way. If it doesn't leave it out. In my experience the vast majority of computer generated borders are either distracting or cheesy. They just don't have the elegence of a real frame. |

Just as composition is important in taking a shot, composition of the presentation, in web-format especially, usually relies solely on the border...so use them.

I have gone back and forth on this one. For me, it is the average gray background of DPC that bothers me. If it contrasts with the image I shot in an obscene way, than a border (usually dark) is in order. If the image is a standout and would be designated.."nice, but unseemly border" than I choose not to use one. Helpful???

There's a lot of opinion about this topic. Many think the best border is the one you decide NOT to use. Other's think the best border is a small, understated and unobtrusive one. Others think big, thick and gaudy is great. If you spend time reading the comments of the top rated pics, you'll probably find more "don't like the border" comments than "love the border," but in the end, it's your choice. |

Definitely a very wide variety of opinions about that one... Personally, I think it can be great if it adds something to the overall image. If it is awful or detracts from the overall image, I think really ruins the shot. Bottom line = your own personal taste.
