I know that a lot of people do, but--

It seems like about one in five people just never mark their comments as helpful, and I want to know: why not? Many of the participants on this website, myself included, go out of their way to make useful commentary and provide constructive feedback. Marking comments as helpful at least lets us know that they've been read.

When I see a person's portfolio full of images with lots of comments but none of them marked helpful, I have to wonder if they've even looked at the comments at all!

Is there any light to shed on this puzzle?

Some people just don't think to do it, I always have to remind my hubby. I always mark mine, I'm so totally greatful for every comment I get!

I read every comment. When someone leaves a positive comment like, "nice shot," or "good job." Anything along those lines. I see those as praise, not being helpful. Some mark the comments as helpful as a way to say thanks.

I've been thinking about this a lot. If there is some sort of feedback as to how I can make my picturs better, then yes, it gets marked helpful.

I can't give you an answer on why some don't check comment. I have also seen what you are talking about. Not the people that don't check every comment as helpful but the people that don't check anything as helpful. But I guess that's there right.

The first thing I do when I login is go to my portfolio and click on 'comments received' and see if I have any new comments. Then I check them helpful if I found them to be helpful.

Is it a big deal? Some people just don't bother with the little things. That doesn't mean they don't read them.

By the way, a much higher percentage of the comments I make that just say "nice shot" get marked helpful then the ones that leave something constructive.

because some aren't that helpful, simple as that.

Because sometimes I use guassian blur to soften the shot to set the mood, and a comment like "Needs Sharpening" or likes, is not helpful to me...

When ever you try to set a mood (around here) in a shot there is always someone that will say "Out of Focus", "Too dark", "blurry" etc... If I intentionally shot in that manner and I know that I was going for a certain effect than I won't mark the comment helpful box... I will however take the comment to heart.

It used to be the norm that people would say "you're welcome" after you say thanks. Now the just say "yeah or uh huh". In most cases, its just simply laziness because "its all about me baby"! I see the "comment helpful" box as an acknowledgement or an appreciation that someone took the time to do what we gripe we dont get enough of around here.....comments. Go figure, laziness prevails.

During a challenge I do not mark any anonymous as helpful. After the challenge is over, I can see which were given by the anonymous commentors. Otherwise, I usually mark any comment as helpful, even if it is one word.

I give in, where on earth do I find that button. Sounds usefull
I think I often don't see new comments as I have many photos in my portfolio & often don't check for comments.

I don't see why people find it so unhelpful when someone tells them they like their photo, it is kind of arrogant IMO.

Goto MY HOME > MY PROFILE.
Look on the left side of the page at the top where it says stats.
You will see: Comments Made, Comments Helpful, and COMMENTS RECEIVED.
Click on COMMENTS RECEIVED.
It will bring up THIS page.
You will see the ones you have clicked helpful or not. You can read the comment. If you find it helpful, click the picture and scroll down and check box.
Then click the back button in your browser and continue scrolling down until you have check all that you find helpful.

Hope that helps.

I mark all comments helpful. Even the mean/crude/nasty ones.

ditto. I think it's nice enough someone would even look at one of my shots, much less take the time to write anything at all. I mark 'em & I appreciate 'em.

There is something strange about the counting of comments. I have more helpful comments that I made (6) than the count of comments that I made (3).

Sounds like three of the six pictures you commented on has been deleted.

On Sunday "comments made" will update. "Helpful Comments" updates real time.

Usually I'll take anything I can get and mark it useful. Lately, I've gotten a couple of uncivil and downright rude comments. Those I haven't marked as useful.
