maybe im young at heart (no surprise) but i think so-called ''yearbookey'' titles are more fun and less dry than ''most ideal focal plane'' and ''least perceptible pincushion distortion''

if you''re about fun, give it titles that let people have some emotional involvement. not everyone that uses this site is mr. spock {g}

OK, can I make some suggestions about how to have this work that will probably be a royal pain to implement?

* Instead of a drop down menu, how about a list with radio buttons? It's a lot easier to click on one button with a name you can immediately see, than it is to search through a drop down menu for a category that may or may not be there. In other words, you almost have to memorize a drop down menu. Does this make sense?

* During a given challenge, you can only vote for one photo per category (I'm sure people will argue with me on this one) with the ability to change that vote to another photo if you so choose. Coupled with the radio button idea, this would mean that certain buttons would already be "filled in" if you'd already voted for a certain category. Maybe the name and/or photo you'd already voted for could be linked to it somehow in case you wanted to go back to look and compare.

* I'd hesitate to suggest any categories that might be construed as negative -- like "Most off-challenge" or "Most idiotic". There are those who might seek to receive such an appellation, but there are also those who might get such a vote and be hurt by it when they were trying for something serious that they saw as on topic.

* Can we come up with some fun icons to represent the eventual categories that could be displayed alongside the ribbons?

* How about retro voting on past challenges for just these new categories?

Like I said... a pain to implement. *grin*

BTW -- my high school yearbook comment (which I think started everybody thinking along those lines) was not meant to be derogatory -- but I suppose it could come across that way.

Whatever the topics just keep em fun, aimed at the idea of encouraging people to take pictures and encourage "glass half full" thinking. :-)

i like all of these ideas. i even like the last one, but don't know about the implementation curve so can't comment .. i'd at the very least, though, be happy with this going forward.

i really like the fun icons idea : ) ..

so d/l, how hard would this be to do, guys? maybe up to 10 ancillary categories? a mix of technical, fun, and analytical categories.

Dropdowns? Easy. Patella's method? Hard. :)

I don't think dropdowns should be completely ignored. You'll be on the page with all of your thumbnails, and that should be a good reminder of what you liked.

Any more suggestions for a possible interface?

Come on Drew! You guys are up to the challenge, I know you are. :-)

I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway since it's the way I'd want it, whether it's realistically possible or no.

I like this idea - about only voting for 1 photo for each of these 'sub' categories, but we are still talking about still voting as usual so they still compete against each other for the actual challenge right? Perhaps when the voting is done they could list them according to 1 thru 10 like they do now, but also list them for each individual category, then you could choose "the one" you want to "enter" for the 'sub' category - make sense?

[quote=magnetic9999]hehe. i hear that hokie.

omg, i just had the greatest idea. maybe this has been suggested before, but if not, here goes:

on the voting, what if there was a drop down menu that let you give a 'special award' to a photo you thought deserving. there would be a bunch of categories on there, like:

"Grossest"
"Artiest"
"Most Creative"
"Most Shmaltzy"
"Dumbest"
"Sexiest"
"Best Focus"
"Most Hangable (On the Wall)"
"Most Obscure"
"Funniest"
"Scariest"
"Most Science Fiction-y"
"Tells a Story"

Etc.

It would be as simple as picking it off a drop-down menu.

Then when the results were posted, images that had received the most awards for their respective category could also be listed.

This would give all KINDS of recognition to every niche and creative-style on here, instead of just 'lumping' everyone together into one undifferentiated, fused, burrito of results.

D? L? WHaddya think?!

EXCELLENT! That would be fun!

I think dropdowns would be best. They tak the least space. They don't have to be accessible as easy as the voting checkboxes, as you need the dropdown only as often as there are categories (perhaps less if you don't think anyone deserved a specific award, maybe more if you change your mind later on).
For the ranking after voting: Another dropdown! :)
Like: 'Sort pictures by' -average vote received -your vote* -cutest -funniest -best DOF -etc
*I think that one's on the 'to do' list, isn't it? Well, as the two go together... :) Some work ahead for D&L!

That's one of the problems with sites like this, good ideas get buried until some enterprising archeologist finds them.

Extra column on your challenge voting page that shows thimb of shots you have chosen with Yearbook Titles. That way you can easily determine if you want to replace one you had already set.

EDIT: If we can blow up the winners, does that mean less competition in the next Challenge?
